3 Common Mistakes Made By Corporate Blog Owners

While there are plenty of resources available that tell you what to do when it comes to corporate blogging, there are very few that will let you what not to do. Mistakes are rampant in corporate blogging, especially when you first get started. Not all are dire, but some may have a lasting effect and could harm the future of your blog. It pays to know what you should do and it pays even more to know what to avoid. Here are the most common mistakes made by corporate blog owners.

1. Abusing social bookmarking sites.

Anyone who has ever had their site banned from digg or any of the other major sites knows how frustrating it can be. When you are first getting started with this form of promotion, it is all to easy to get carried away and submit every single post you have. This is frowned upon and will likely buy you the reputation as a spammer, or someone that should be ignored.

There is no doubt that social bookmarking is powerful, but that power should not be abused. Submit your posts sparingly, and avoid black hat techniques for promotion. Study which of the posts make it to the front page of these sites and then see which of your own would fit that general form. If necessary, write posts that will appeal to the users of these sites, but always remember the integrity of your site.

2. Failing to post pictures in your blog.

This is an easy one and it is also the one that trips up many blog owners. Have you ever seen a pictureless blog? It’s flat, it’s boring and there is nothing on the page to draw the eye. Pictures, when used properly, enhance your blog. A lack of pictures makes it dull.

Try to stick to one picture per post, or even every other post. If necessary, post more than one but remember that not everyone has a high speed connection. Optimize those images, use them sparingly and remember that a picture is worth a thousand words.

3. Ignoring your audience.

This is deadly to any blog. If you are not paying attention to what your reader’s want to know, then you may as well quit blogging right now. While you can’t please all of your readers all of the time, you can find ways to make them feel included, and to write what they want to know about.

One of the best ways to determine what your audience wants to know is by using an analytic program that will give you more insight into your site’s traffic. Pay attention to the keywords that are used to find your site, pay attention to what searches are performed and measure traffic to see how effective your posts are.

While there are certainly more mistakes that can be made, these are the most common. Try to avoid making them on your own corporate blog and you’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Knowing When to Quit

The sad reality is that every year thousands of corporate blog die a quiet death and the only one that notices is their owner. Whether it is through a lack of attention, or simply an inability to find the right audience, keeping a blog alive can be a difficult task. If you are struggling to figure out whether or not it’s time to let your blog die a natural death, there are a few things to think about first. Quitting may be your best option, at least when you consider how much time and money you spend, but it should also be your last option.

Before you decide to throw in the towel, it’s a good idea to give it one last ditch effort. Take a month and set aside some extra time to really promote your blog. Remember, the people who succeed are the ones that held on for just a little bit longer. You could be missing out on thousands of readers if you quit too early. Here are some quick tips to help you form your last ditch effort.

1. Optimize Your Keywords.

Take the time to go through your posts and optimize them completely. Don’t forget the post titles either since this is very important. Post new content as well that is optimized and let the search engines re-index your site. This may help bump you up a few spots in the results page.

2. Start Submitting Your Feed to RSS Directories.

This strategy can work in many different ways. First, you are getting your feed out there in front of more people, and second, you are building quality backlinks, which in turn help your search engine placement. Aim to submit your feed to at least 50 directories to give yourself a good chance.

3. Write Posts That Get Attention and Promote Them.

Many times, the only reason a blog fails to find a readership is simply due to the fact that it is boring. Read through the front page of Digg and other social bookmarking sites and see what people are interested in. Write content that is applicable to your own site, but still follows this format and then submit it to these sites.

4. Use StumbleUpon.

While the advertising service here is hit or miss, the regular aspect of the site can bring in huge results, depending on your topic. Set up an account and stumble your site. You should be able to pick up at least a few new readers right away and over time, this will keep occurring.

Still not working? Or you were spending too much time blogging and not enough on your core business.

How to Target Your Corporate Blog Audience

How interactive should your blog be? Who is your audience?Once you’re ready to set up your own corporate blog, you’ll need to figure out what your audience is since this will determine how you write your blog. If you already have a set group of customers that you feel will be reading your blog, you’re already pretty much set. However, if you want to reach out to a new audience, there are a few things that you will have to do first.

1. What is your demographic?

This is actually quite important when it comes to writing your blog. A younger crowd is going to want to see a blog that is more fun and integrated with social networking features, while an older crowd may feel more comfortable with a more staid blog. It will really depend, but these are some wide guidelines to help you. If you don’t know your demographic, it’s best to shoot for the middle of the road when it comes to style and the types of features that you offer on your blog.

2. How do you plan to find new readers?

Once you know your demographic, this will determine how you go about attracting new readers to your blog. For those under 35, promoting your blog on social bookmarking sites such as Digg will deliver your audience to you. However, these readers are very savvy and don’t appreciate over commercialized posts. You’ll need to learn how to walk that fine line between that and getting your message across.

Other readers can be reached through a PPC ad campaign targeting keywords that are well suited to your blog. This is a little expensive and most companies prefer not to have to spend money to promote their blog, but this is a good method. A secondary choice would be to release a press release detailing what your new blog will be doing.

3. The third option is just to let your readers discover you through search engines.

This will take the longest amount of time when it comes to building up your readership and it is a bit hit or miss. You’ll need to be very patient if you’re trying to grow your blog using only this method and you may never have the results you’re looking for.

The best bet is to combine all of these marketing tools into one to help you target your key audience. Once you’ve done that, word of mount will help you continue to grow your blog. Remember that you’ll need to keep writing compelling content if you want your audience to stick with you. A blog management company can assist you in writing posts that will get attention and they are also very useful when it comes to promoting your blog and handling the every day tasks that are associated with it. If you don’t have a lot of time to devote to building your blog’s audience, this is a very good solution that works well for most companies, big or small.

How to Stay Focused on Your Corporate Blog

You don\'t have to take the same route, post after post, liven your blog up!When you first start your corporate blog, it can be easy to get caught up in the excitement. After a few on target posts, you may find yourself wandering and it can be difficult to find that balance of posting interesting content and keeping with your original plan. Here are some tips to help you stay focused on your corporate blogging adventure.

1. Set out a roadmap, complete with sidestreets.

You can stay 100% on topic all of the time or your blog would be pretty boring. When you’re figuring out the basics of what you will be talking about on your blog, find relevant secondary topics that still tie into what you do but are a little bit more fun. You can then allow yourself to go down these sidestreets, and you won’t have to worry that you’ll be going off track. In essence, you’re staying on topic, even if it doesn’t feel like it, since you’ve already worked out what will be acceptable to discuss on your blog.

2. Allow yourself one fun post a week.

You can’t be serious all the time and your readers won’t appreciate overly somber posts. Try to allow yourself one to kick back and have fun. This is a good time to post a top ten list or something that is engaging, fun and shows your company in a good light. By giving yourself one free day a week where you can express yourself in a different way, you’re cutting back on the risk that you’ll want to do this all the time.

In addition, your readers will learn to really appreciate this fun day and you may even find that your traffic spike on these days. As you post fun topics like this, you’ll also have a better chance of getting your site on Digg, or other social bookmarking sites. The readers that frequent these sites are notorious for their love of top ten lists and you can explode your traffic if you happen to get one of your posts included. By getting a little funny, you can really increase your chances of having this happen.

3. Utilize polls and other features to keep your reader’s engaged.

If you’re posting the same thing day after day, it is all too easy to lose your focus. Try adding fun elements, such as a polls, that encourage reader participation. You can actually learn a lot about your customers and your readers by trying this. Try to do this at least once a week as well.

These are just a few ideas of how to stay focused on your corporate blog. A blog management company will be able to help you with your needs and can make it easier to produce a blog that is not only fun and engaging but gets your message across the way you need it to be portrayed. They are very useful, especially if you are completely new to blogging in general.

Corporate Blogging Issues and Concerns

Press all the right buttons with your blog.If you have never blogged before and are interested in starting a corporate blog, there are a few issues and concerns that you need to be aware of before you ever get started. These can be treacherous waters at times and if you are not prepared, it is all too easy to get in over your head. Blogging can be a great way to increase consumer confidence and build a strong brand, but you will need to be able to spot and avoid some common pitfalls along the wall.

First up, you need to make sure that your blog is taking advantage of all the latest technological advances. This means having a blog that has an RSS feed and utilizing buttons that will allow your readers to share the articles on social bookmarking sites. These are two very simple things but many bloggers omit them. An RSS feed is essential since most blog readers rely on their newsreader software to find out when new articles are posted. This is done with RSS feeds. If you don’t have one, your readers may never make it back to your site to see if you have new content posted.

Social bookmarking buttons are incredibly useful and can help new readers discover you. There are plugins available for most blogging applications that allow you to easily add these buttons to your site. Once they are there, visitors can simply click that button to share your blog with others. This can really increase your page views, especially when you have a popular post.

Next, you need to be aware that blogging is a very public forum and you will be opening yourself up to criticism, and some of it may be ugly. You need to go over some responses now so that you can keep a cool head when it matters. If your company has some known issues with customer support or other problems, you need to have responses all ready to go that will address this.

Comments sections can be deadly for a company that has this kind of problem. You can avoid a lot of controversy by simply not allowing any comments. However, this can backfire if readers feel that you are hiding something and do not want to allow them the freedom to discuss your posts. It’s a double edged sword and you’ll need to find the right balance for your unique needs.

Lastly, running a successful corporate blog can take a lot of time. If you are trying to do it yourself, or if you have an employee handling it for you, this will be taking you away from your other work. You may want to consider hiring a blog management service so that you can focus on your actual work and leave the blog to them. This is a great solution for first time bloggers that aren’t really sure what they need to be doing with their blog and how to handle everything that comes with it.

How to Learn from Your Competitors to Build a Better Corporate Blog

Know your competition.Sometimes it can be pretty tough to get inspiration for a new corporate blog. You may understand that you need one, but you’re not quite sure where to start. There’s an easy way that you can put together a plan for your own blog and it will only take a few minutes of your time. Anyone can do this and it can make a big difference in how well your blog does.

First, start by making a list of all of your competitors. Find the ones that have blogs and make an effort to go to their sites and read every single post they have made. You’ll be getting some pretty powerful information and you’ll be getting some ideas on what you should be doing and what you should be avoiding. Once you’ve compared all of them, you’ll have the groundwork to start building your own blog.

1. Look at how they write their blog.

Although everyone has to find their own voice, sometimes it helps if you can see what other people are doing. Look to see which blogs are quite personable and which ones are stiff. Chances are the personable ones are the most popular. Learn from these techniques and study to see how your competitors manage to be engaging without crossing the line into unprofessionalism.

2. Find out how they promote their blog.

Are your competitors relying on organic results, or are they actively promoting their blog? Look to see the types of advertising they may be using and which social bookmarking sites that are using to drum up new readers. You can then adapt these methods to your own needs. It may take a little trial and error but you can learn a lot from what they are doing.

3. Find out how they rank in search engines.

Pick one post and see if you can get it to come up by searching for the keywords contained in it. If you can’t then that blogger is not doing a good job with their corporate blog. If you can easily find them, emulate the techniques that they are using to help increase your chances of getting listed in the top 10 for search results.

4. Look at what you could do better.

Take an honest and hard look at your competitors. See which ones are using techniques that work and then come up with a plan that will improve those results. Look at sites that may not be as strong and learn from them – avoid what they are doing since it is not working for them and chances are it won’t work for you either.

A blog management company can help you craft a plan that will ensure your blogging success. Sometimes, it is better to get help from a professional so that you can ensure you’ll be able to meet your goals with a lot less effort and you won’t have to spend as much time.

Learning How to Promote Specific Posts On Your Blog

When corporate blog owners first get started, there is a lot of pressure to focus on promoting the whole blog. While this does work, there is an easier way to get attention and increase your chances of success. By breaking down your blog promotion into actual posts, you can see better results in most cases. Let’s take a look at how this works.

First, you’ll need to find or write a post that you are really proud of. This should be a post that is absolutely stellar, makes a point or even one that could cause a little controversy. Read through all of your posts until you find that perfect one. Don’t worry if it is a little old, that doesn’t matter. If it is literally ancient, write a new post referencing it and work that old post into a new one.

Ok, so once you have found the perfect post, the chosen one, it is time to start promoting the heck out of it. You won’t be focusing on your entire corporate blog here, just that one post. Start submitting it to social bookmarking sites. Write a press release that references the post and put it on free PR sites. Find ways to make that little post stand out and get noticed.

The immediate benefit, especially if the content is evergreen, currently a hot topic, or controversial is that you’re going to see a lot of traffic to that one post. You should be linking to that actual post and not your main blog page if you want this to work. So, you’ve got people coming in to see that post, how to do you take advantage of this situation.

Before you even start, you will need to add links in that perfect post that reference other posts on your corporate blog that are somehow related. You should also be using a plugin that will display related posts at the bottom of the one that you are promoting. This will encourage readers to explore your site further.

Let’s take a look at a step by step process:

  1. Find the post you want to promote
  2. Make sure that you add links to your other content inside this post
  3. Make sure that you have a related posts link at the bottom of the post
  4. Submit the actual post page to social bookmarking sites

By following these steps, you will be able to successfully promote that solitary post and have it work for you. This is ideal for corporate blogs that may be a little on the staid or boring side. If you are focusing on serious industry news, you may not have the opportunity to write a lot of posts that will get a reader’s attention. Instead of trying to create every post that way, work on just doing one really great post and use this as leverage to attract new readers.

Once you have this technique down, you’ll be able to find other posts to promote to get the same benefits.

Corporate Blogging Demystified

Keep typing! For some, the premise of corporate blogging is a bit strange. It’s hard to know when a corporate blog may be right for you and it’s also difficult to know just what you’re supposed to do with one. Here’s an easy guide to help you get your blog started the right way.

Purpose

First, the main purpose of a corporate blog can be divided into three part: Attracting New Customers, Improving Search Engine Rankings and Building a Stronger Brand. All three play into one another and you shouldn’t have one without the other. With the right kind of blog, you can accomplish all three things without difficulty. This does mean however that you will need to work on a few things when you are getting started.

In order to improve your SEO, your blog’s posts should contain keywords that are relevant to your business. This means making a list of what you would like to have your site listed under with search engines and then making sure that you mention these keywords throughout your posts. This should start producing results within about two weeks to two months, depending on how often you update your blog.

Building a stronger brand is accomplished by creating a relationship with your readers that is both endearing and professional. You’ll need to walk that fine line between having engaging prose and getting too friendly. It takes a little while, but most get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Attracting new customers means that you will need to market your new blog. Advertise it on your site, promote it with social bookmarking sites and you may even consider running a PPC campaign to promote it. This will take a little time to work, but you should be able to start attracting more new customers as soon as your blog posts are indexed.

Keeping up The Good Work

In order to reinforce all of the above, you need to make sure that you are publishing your blog on a regular basis. If you can’t put up a new post every day, you should try for at least once a week. The more often you publish, the greater your chances are of getting a good ranking with search engines. Your site will be indexed more often and your readers will have more to keep them occupied.

Running a corporate blog usually entails quite a bit of time, so you may want to consider hiring a blog management service. They can assist you with promotion, more frequent posting and handling the day to day needs of a corporate blog. This frees up your staff to focus on their own tasks instead of getting caught up with the blog. In some cases, a blog can take a few minutes to manage, or a few hours. Either way, it is helpful to have someone else there to help you through the entire process to ensure that your blog is a successful as it can be and that you achieve your goals.
