As corporate blogging becomes more popular, many companies are wondering if this is something that is right for them. There are many benefits that can be achieved by having a corporate blog, such as increased sales, better brand recognition and SEO, but none are as important as creating that personal link with your readers. A corporate blog is a tool that can be used to really create a relationship with readers, which can result in an increase of the other three points mentioned above.
To create that personal link there are a few techniques that should be used, as well as a few that should be avoided. In many cases, a fine balance is needed to accomplish your goals. For example, if you need your corporate blog to move a certain product, there is a way of selling it, without appearing overly commercial. Let’s look at a few ways that companies can create the personal touch with their blog.
First, the blogger needs to give at least their first name. A last name is not essential, but if you are a well known executive, this can be a good thing to add. No blogger should be anonymous, as this makes the corporate blog feel more like a promotional tool than a public service or outlet for information. In addition, it does help to have a picture of the blogger, since this does give the readers a face to go with the posts. This is is not necessary, but it is helpful.
Next, the blog should focus on providing information that is useful to readers. This point cannot be stressed enough. If a post is useful, readers are less likely to be offended if you are selling them something. Not all of your posts should be centered around “Buy our products.” You need to create a mix of personal posts, product announcements and news that is related to your industry.
The next point is vital – creating the right kind of relationship. When you first start blogging and you’re getting new readers that are interacting with you, it’s easy to let your guard down and let that level of professionalism slip. This should never happen on a corporate blog. If you need a personal outlet – create your own blog – but don’t bring your issues and opinions to your corporate blog.
This is your company’s public face – do you want it to be perceived as unprofessional and scatter brained? No! Each post should be written in a concise format that uses appropriate language and humor, without crossing the line. This is a balancing act that can be difficult at first.
We recommend using a blog management service that can assist you in finding that balance and avoiding the pitfalls that doom corporate blogs to failure. These are powerful tools, but you need to make sure that you are using them in the right way to avoid having a disaster on your hands that is hard to erase from the public’s mind.

February 9th, 2010 — content, search engine
When it comes to trying to promote your business in an organic way, corporate blogging is possibly the best tool that you can use. This is one of the easiest ways to implement SEO on your site with little effort and a blog has the added benefit of being incredibly powerful in other areas as well. Let’s take a look at just a few of the ways that a corporate blog can work to produce great SEO results.
1. More content equals more discoverability.
Each blog post you make works in your favor with search engines. You’ll be covering more topics, using more keywords and giving search engines more to index. This will result in higher rankings on a wide variety of topics and will make it easier for new customers to discover your blog. Most search engines index blogs regularly and it’s very easy to nab that top spot when you are using this technique.
For example, let’s say that your company specializes in the sale of tennis rackets. You post a blog about Wimbledon. Your blog post gets ranked with this keyword as well as several others for the industry. Now, when someone does a search for Wimbledon, that blog post of yours is going to show up in the results. You’re reaching someone that is already interested in tennis and providing them with a resource that they can really use.
2. Frequent content = more frequent indexing.
Search engines use spiders to index web pages. Pretty much every site out there will get indexed at least once, but only those that update on a regular basis will get frequent indexing. By publishing a regular blog, you will start attracting those spiders on a daily or weekly basis. This means that instead of having to wait for six months to roll over until the spider comes back around, your content will be indexed almost immediately.
3. More pages = more search engine interest.
Most corporate sites are pretty static and cover the usual general information about a company. That’s not very interesting for search engines that are looking for dynamic content that people want to read. By adding more pages that cover several different topics, you are just making it so much easier for these spiders to want to add your content.
In addition, instead of the usual 5 to 10 pages for a site, you’ll be building up several every month. This just increases your chances of getting a better ranking and being able to have your pages show up with many different keywords.
When you’re starting a corporate blog it is a good idea to hire someone that has experience in handling SEO. When you get started on the right foot with a service that knows how to optimize your blog for the best results, you will see much quicker results and your blog will begin attracting more attention on a regular basis. A blog is a powerful tool, but only when it is used correctly.

One of the main reasons that many companies begin blogging is to help them attract new customers. With the use of SEO or search engine optimization, you can dramatically increase your overall discoverability on search engines and you should see an increase in the amount of traffic that your site sees. Let’s take a look at how you be an SEO success with your blog.
1. Use the right keywords.
Just as you should use SEO principles on your site, you will need to use the same ones with your blog. Make sure that each post contains keywords relevant to your site and your industry. Don’t use the same ones over and over again, branch out into the long tail words for your site. This will help increase your traffic and give you more opportunities to rank in the top 10, especially with more obscure keywords that are nevertheless popular.
2. Use the right titles.
Most times, your blog post title will be the text that your readers see when they find you through a search engine. You want to be able to pull them in with that title and convince them to click through. Make sure that your blog post titles are compelling and that they contain keywords just like the content. This is a great tip that not a lot of businesses use. It can really make a difference in your overall traffic.
3. Allow trackbacks.
Most blog applications will have a feature known as a trackback. This allows other sites to link back to you if they are discussing your posts. The more links you have coming into your site from other locations, the greater your chances are of getting a higher ranking. This is another technique that not many companies are aware of but it can make a very large difference in your rankings.
4. Publish frequently.
The more often you publish your blog, the better your chances are of getting indexed promptly. Search engine spiders don’t go to every site on the internet every day. They make a log of how often a site is updated and then crawl it every once in awhile if it does not publish a lot of new content. If you are publishing every day, you will be training those spiders to index your blog every single day. This gives you a chance to take advantage of hot keywords to get better rankings and as a plus side, you’ll get to see results a lot faster.
Sometimes, it takes a pro to get the right mix of the above techniques. It is a good idea to hire a blog management company that specializes in SEO if you are not familiar with this process. They can help you completely optimize your blog to ensure that you are getting more visitors and a better overall ranking. They can also speed up the amount of time that it can take to build up a readership by using SEO techniques.

August 7th, 2009 — content, customer feedback, engaging ideas
Sometimes when you start a corporate blog you can feel as though you’re going to have plenty to talk about, but after a few weeks – this may change dramatically. If you’re getting a little stuck and there isn’t much news to talk about on your blog, you’re going to need to get out there and create some. Here are some tips to help you keep your blog fun and current.
1. Bring in current events that match your products or services.
If you’re running out of things to talk about, it’s time to put on your journalist hat and see what’s going on in the news that can be integrated with your company. This has the upside of being. a great wellspring of inspiration for days when you really can’t find anything to talk about. Find interesting news pertinent to your industry and offer commentary on it. Find the angle that puts your company in a good light.
For example, let’s say that your business manufacturers drill bits for oil companies. Right off the bat, chances are you are not going to be able to find much to talk about. However, you can use the news about rising gas prices to your advantage. Talk about how the process of drilling for oil can make prices go up, and how you are working to offer the lowest prices possible so that the consumer can realize some savings. This is just one example of how you can spin current events to suit your needs. Don’t be afraid to take on a controversial subject, this can help you get more readers.
2. Make a list of your site keywords to use as inspiration.
Sometimes, the writing well goes a bit dry. If you’re already using SEO on your blog, you can turn to that list of keywords for some ideas on topics to write about. This is really useful when you are in a pinch and can’t come up with anything interesting to talk about. Find a keyword that meshes well with current events and go from there.
3. If you can’t find anything to talk about, turn the problem into an open forum on your blog.
Ask your readers to provide their opinions on an issue that is pertinent to your industry and then discuss this with them. This is a great technique that can help build reader interaction and make your blog less one sided.
4. Say nothing at all.
If you really can’t come up with anything, it’s ok to take a day off once in awhile. Just don’t make a habit out of it. It’s better to wait for a really interesting subject than it is to drone on about your socks if you are really stuck for a topic.
A blog management company can help you come up with new topics and they can also help you stay on target with your blog. These services are invaluable to busy company owners.

May 18th, 2009 — brand awareness, content, customer base, search engine
For some, the premise of corporate blogging is a bit strange. It’s hard to know when a corporate blog may be right for you and it’s also difficult to know just what you’re supposed to do with one. Here’s an easy guide to help you get your blog started the right way.
Purpose
First, the main purpose of a corporate blog can be divided into three part: Attracting New Customers, Improving Search Engine Rankings and Building a Stronger Brand. All three play into one another and you shouldn’t have one without the other. With the right kind of blog, you can accomplish all three things without difficulty. This does mean however that you will need to work on a few things when you are getting started.
In order to improve your SEO, your blog’s posts should contain keywords that are relevant to your business. This means making a list of what you would like to have your site listed under with search engines and then making sure that you mention these keywords throughout your posts. This should start producing results within about two weeks to two months, depending on how often you update your blog.
Building a stronger brand is accomplished by creating a relationship with your readers that is both endearing and professional. You’ll need to walk that fine line between having engaging prose and getting too friendly. It takes a little while, but most get the hang of it pretty quickly.
Attracting new customers means that you will need to market your new blog. Advertise it on your site, promote it with social bookmarking sites and you may even consider running a PPC campaign to promote it. This will take a little time to work, but you should be able to start attracting more new customers as soon as your blog posts are indexed.
Keeping up The Good Work
In order to reinforce all of the above, you need to make sure that you are publishing your blog on a regular basis. If you can’t put up a new post every day, you should try for at least once a week. The more often you publish, the greater your chances are of getting a good ranking with search engines. Your site will be indexed more often and your readers will have more to keep them occupied.
Running a corporate blog usually entails quite a bit of time, so you may want to consider hiring a blog management service. They can assist you with promotion, more frequent posting and handling the day to day needs of a corporate blog. This frees up your staff to focus on their own tasks instead of getting caught up with the blog. In some cases, a blog can take a few minutes to manage, or a few hours. Either way, it is helpful to have someone else there to help you through the entire process to ensure that your blog is a successful as it can be and that you achieve your goals.

December 9th, 2008 — customer base, search engine
You’ve got a website… Fantastic! Are customers finding you? Without a blog or advertising program, probably not. Having a telephone number is not very helpful if you aren’t listed a phone book (or online equivalent). The website is the same way – except that the “phone book” has been replaced with the search engine (with Google being the best known example). Millions of people are using search engines everyday to find what they want. It could be anything from finding a lawyer, a window installation person, or managing your finances better. If you rank higher, you’ll get more customers.
Let’s pretend you are Acme Corporation. While you’re business is doing okay, you really only have one customer: Wile E. Coyote. He comes to you faithfully every day in his attempt to capture the Road Runner. Problem is, he only buys a couple of anvils a month – you need to sell more. What if all the millions of people searching Google for anvils found your website? If you have a quality anvil at a fair price, you might expect a phone call, a sale, and a new customer – hopefully as good as Wile.
The difference may seem subtle, but it’s important. The people searching for the Acme Corporation directly are already likely to find your website. These people are also likely your existing customers or someone who has already been referred by someone else. The person searching for anvils doesn’t know you and won’t find you unless you tell the search engines that you are an expert on anvils.
How do you become an expert on anvils? You give the search engines what they want. The search engines are looking for four things:
- Content – Without content, search engines would be out of business. If you write about anvils a lot, the search engines are going to notice.
- Updated Content – It’s not enough to just write a batch of articles on anvils. You could put 100 articles up on anvils tomorrow and the search engines might be impressed. However, after a couple of weeks, they’d realize that you aren’t providing them with anything new and gravitate to another site on anvils.
- Page Layout – There’s a science to telling the search engines what’s important and what is not important on your website. Search engines really appreciate it when you help them out and highlight the important parts. This is often called Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in the industry.
- Links From Others – If other websites link to your articles about anvils, the search engines count that as a vote in your favor. These votes are tallied and weighed with the other factors
A well-architected, corporate blog is the best way to score big with the first three. Some customers may find that’s all they need to become “anvil experts.” We do provide services and strategies for the getting links from others making Buildify your a complete solution.
