February 9th, 2010 — content, search engine
When it comes to trying to promote your business in an organic way, corporate blogging is possibly the best tool that you can use. This is one of the easiest ways to implement SEO on your site with little effort and a blog has the added benefit of being incredibly powerful in other areas as well. Let’s take a look at just a few of the ways that a corporate blog can work to produce great SEO results.
1. More content equals more discoverability.
Each blog post you make works in your favor with search engines. You’ll be covering more topics, using more keywords and giving search engines more to index. This will result in higher rankings on a wide variety of topics and will make it easier for new customers to discover your blog. Most search engines index blogs regularly and it’s very easy to nab that top spot when you are using this technique.
For example, let’s say that your company specializes in the sale of tennis rackets. You post a blog about Wimbledon. Your blog post gets ranked with this keyword as well as several others for the industry. Now, when someone does a search for Wimbledon, that blog post of yours is going to show up in the results. You’re reaching someone that is already interested in tennis and providing them with a resource that they can really use.
2. Frequent content = more frequent indexing.
Search engines use spiders to index web pages. Pretty much every site out there will get indexed at least once, but only those that update on a regular basis will get frequent indexing. By publishing a regular blog, you will start attracting those spiders on a daily or weekly basis. This means that instead of having to wait for six months to roll over until the spider comes back around, your content will be indexed almost immediately.
3. More pages = more search engine interest.
Most corporate sites are pretty static and cover the usual general information about a company. That’s not very interesting for search engines that are looking for dynamic content that people want to read. By adding more pages that cover several different topics, you are just making it so much easier for these spiders to want to add your content.
In addition, instead of the usual 5 to 10 pages for a site, you’ll be building up several every month. This just increases your chances of getting a better ranking and being able to have your pages show up with many different keywords.
When you’re starting a corporate blog it is a good idea to hire someone that has experience in handling SEO. When you get started on the right foot with a service that knows how to optimize your blog for the best results, you will see much quicker results and your blog will begin attracting more attention on a regular basis. A blog is a powerful tool, but only when it is used correctly.

Blogging has become an extremely popular activity for businesses, and it also has created a very important impact in other circles as well, including an activity for the political scene as well as for ordinary individuals as well. Google purchased Blogger in 2003, and ever since, blogging has continued to grow at an exponential pace. Here are some of the best ways that blogging can be used in order to enhance your business.
1 – The hits that you attract to your website will be more qualified.
By providing interesting content on your site through your blog, you can reach a much larger audience. Post links to your website and when readers follow these links, you will know it is because they are actually interested in what it is that you are offering.
2 – You can increase your return on investment, or ROI.
By showcasing your new products and including information in your blog, your readers will easily be driven from your blog onto your sales pages or into your catalog of products. The more people who click on your site, the more sales you will be able to realize. Marketing really is a numbers game, and blogging for your business really can help.
3 – You can increase your ranking in search engines.
If you use the best keywords and long tail phrases in your blog entries, you can significantly increase your search engine ranking. Search engines are looking for fresh content above all else, and blogs certainly do provide it.
4 – You can develop a stronger connection with your readers.
By creating an open means of communication with your readers, you can develop a rapport or a relationship with them. They will appreciate the information that you are giving them, including tips, advice, updates and product information, and you will benefit from the relationships that drive sales in the long run.
5 – You can create better relationships through communication on a two way basis.
Allowing readers to respond to your blog posts with comments and questions will give you an even better opportunity to develop strong relationships with current and future customers. Make sure that you respond to them to develop this communication.
6 – You can establish yourself as an expert or authority in your line of business or your industry.
Your blog will let you offer valuable information that your audience is looking for, and this will allow you to showcase your expertise to all of the world. This is an excellent way to gain the trust of both current and potential customers as well.
7 – Blogs are one of the most cost effective methods of publishing online.
Blogs can be set up for very little cost, and do not require a programmer in most cases. Some blogger hosts are completely free and will set the site up for you. In other words, a blog can cost between nothing and approximately $10 a month; a cost effective option consider the profit potential.

December 20th, 2009 — Buildify, blog reviews
Reading and reviewing corporate blogs from other companies is a great way to learn a little bit more about your own blog. Microsoft has a large community of blogs, and a wide variety of bloggers writing in numerous blogs within this community. There are a number of employee blogs in the Microsoft blog community, which is insightful and interesting, but many of the community blogs are rich in technical jargon which is useful to those who are more tech savvy but not necessarily useful to those who are not used to the lingo.
There are a lot of blogs that are from Microsoft or about Microsoft, and many focus on technical advances relating to the Microsoft software. However, there is also a higher education blog that is part of the Microsoft community which relates to programs that are being integrated into universities for students. For example, I read about a software program called Business Intelligence and how Microsoft Performance Point is going to bring benefits to universities and the students who attend them, which was a pleasant subject to read about.
Because so many of the Microsoft blogs are technical in nature, they do not get many comments from readers despite being updated rather frequently. Most of the blogs in this network do not encourage dialog and do not appear to be very engaging. Let’s break down some of the details of these blogs in a purely number way.
Ease of Finding – 9 out of 10.
Once I typed “Microsoft” into Google’s search engine, a bunch of different Microsoft blogs came up. Blogs can also be found through the Microsoft website as well.
Frequency – 6 out of 10 –
These blogs are updated pretty frequently, but not on any real schedule that I can discern. I was finding some blogs with entries that were a few days old, and nothing new or fresh despite plenty to say.
Engaging Writing – 5 out of 10 –
The writing in many of these blogs is really only going to relate to tech savvy readers, or people who are really serious about finding out more information about Microsoft. This writing may be somewhat engaging, but it caters to heavily to a specific audience and leaves out a lot of potential readers in the process.
Relevance – 6 out of 10 –
Blogs in this network are highly catered to people who are seriously into technology, and as a result, they really are not relevant to the general public as a whole.
Focus – 8 out of 10 –
Perhaps too focused, but the focus here is good.
Honesty – 7 out of 10 –
The technology and software blogs appear honest, but I am less sure about the employee run blogs, giving these guys a solid 7.
Interactivity – 3 out of 10 –
These blogs are not very interactive, as they spend no time facilitating conversation or answering questions for readers.
Responsiveness – 3 out of 10 –
These blogs are not very responsive, as it does not seem like anyone is creating conversation in the comments, or even responding to those which are posted.
Grand total score for the Microsoft blog network is 48 out of 80.

If you have ever felt like you were blogging to a wall, you know how difficult it can be to engage your audience. During the first few weeks or even months after starting your own corporate blog, there are going to be dry periods where you are writing for a handful of people. This is the most frustrating period and many bloggers pull up stakes. However, if you can begin writing more effective posts, you will start to see an increase in readers.
So, how do you that? There are many ways that you can gauge the overall effectiveness of your blog. We’re going to look at the two most important ways and provide tips on gauging and improving your effectiveness. Let’s get started!
Reader Effectiveness
This can be a tough one to gauge, at least at first, but you can learn a lot if you take the time to do your research. You will need to make sure that you have analytics software installed on your blog (Google Analytics is one of the best and it is free). This is going to be one of your main tools when it comes to figuring out how you are impacting your readers.
There are three main ways to gauge whether or not you are reaching your readers:
- The amount of comments left on your blog
- Whether or not your traffic starts to climb
- How many links you are getting from other sites
All three are vital to your corporate blog – but it’s not always easy to improve this area. First, start by including your audience in the discussion. Ask them direct questions, encourage them to leave comments, and keep up the conversation with them. Little by little, you’ll notice more interaction and your blog will begin to pick up steam.
Search Engine Effectiveness
While the results from this can be a bit slow to realize, you should start to see something happening if you are blogging effectively for search engines. You can gauge this by:
- How high your Google Page Rank is.
- How many new links you have coming in to your blog
- How well your blog does in results pages
- How many people are entering your site from search engines (see analytics)
If you are using keywords and not seeing your blog anywhere in the search results for that keyword, there is something wrong. Either you are picking keywords that simply have too much popularity, or you are not using them the right way.
Density is vital when it comes to keywords. You’ll need to include the phrase in the title of your post, in the first and last sentence and throughout the post. A good rule of thumb is to shoot for 2 to 3% density on your keywords or phrases. This will make a big difference.
If you are using keywords where there are already millions of results, fine tune your approach. For example, instead of real estate, you can use the keywords Montana Real Estate. Focus on long tail keywords as well to start building up solid results.

One of the things that many corporate blog owners do not consider is a name for their blog. Many make the mistake of simply using the format of “Company Name’s Blog.” This is great to a point, but you’ll be missing out on some great ways to promote your blog. In addition, having a catchy name means that you’ll be much more likely to have your readers remember your blog and you’ll have better luck at building up a strong readership. Here are some tips to remember when you’re getting ready to start your next corporate blog.
1. Get creative.
A boring name may tell your readers that your blog is boring as well. That is not an impression that you want to create. Instead of sticking with the standard format, find a way to get creative. For example, if your main site sells books, instead of using Bookstore’s Blog, you could use “Bookworm’s Corner” or something else that is somehow related to your industry. That way, you’ll be letting your readers know that you are not a stagnant and boring company and they’ll be more likely to build an internal relationship with the blog.
2. Use keywords.
One of the easiest ways to pick a title for your blog is to find the most popular keywords for your sector and incorporate them into the name. This may take a little time, but it will be a big help when it comes to having search engines index your blog. Anytime you have an opportunity to use keywords, you should be utilizing it. That way, when a user does a search for that keyword, your blog will pop up in the results. It really makes a big difference in your ranking, especially if you publish on a frequent basis.
The key to getting this to work the right way is to configure your blog software to use your blog title on every post you make. For example: Blog Title: Post Title. This will increase your chances of getting a much higher ranking on any search engine and you’ll also be able to use this as a promotional tool. By getting your name out there in search results, you’ll be increasing the chances of building a strong brand with a recognizable name.
Don’t be afraid to change the name of your blog if it is not working for you. If you don’t have a lot of readers yet, it really won’t make that much of a difference. However, it does help to use the name of your blog in your URL. You may want to consider purchasing a brand new domain name for your blog so that you can maximize all of the benefits mentioned above.
Naming your blog should be a well thought out process. This is the name that readers will recognize, possibly even before your company name. Make sure that it correctly reflects your business and what you hope to achieve with your corporate blog.

July 11th, 2009 — blog design, platform
There is a lot of controversy over which blogging platform is ideal for corporate blogs. With so many schools of thought on the matter, it can be difficult to figure out which one you should be using. We have two main favorites, Blogger and Wordpress, and both are very well suited to corporate blogging.
The two main benefits of both of these platforms is that they are incredibly easy to use, and incredibly search engine friendly. That solves a lot of problems right there. While we typically don’t recommend free services for corporate blogging, now that Blogger allows you to attach your own URL to your Blogger account, they’ve moved up in our estimation.
Basically, if you don’t want to go through the trouble of using server space for your corporate blog and you need a publishing platform that is literally idiot proof, then Blogger is ideal. It has many of the same features as Wordpress, and since it is owned by Google, you’ll have a pretty good chance of getting a good ranking as long as you keep publishing quality content.
For corporate blog owners that need a little more control, Wordpress is our natural favorite. There are thousands of customization options that are available and it is very easy to get started. With the right plugins, you can make a very advanced site without breaking a sweat, and you’ll be optimizing your content at the same time.
While there are other platforms that work well for corporate blogs, we really prefer Wordpress for two main reasons:
1. Smaller learning curve.
Wordpress takes less than five minutes to install, even if you have no prior experience. Everything is spelled out for you in the dashboard for your site and publishing is incredibly easy. With the right configuration you can easily build a very popular corporate blog without any effort.
2. More options for optimization.
There are thousands of plugins for Wordpress that are designed to help you manage comments, optimize your content, take advantage of SEO trends, and keep everything running smoothly. These are all easy to install and use and most require very little interaction on your part.
The bottom line is that not everyone can afford to hire a web designer or programmer. Either one of these solutions is absolutely free to use and in most cases, they are more capable than the platforms that actually do cost money. For those that need to get a quick start and do not have the time to learn HTML, PHP coding and basic blogging set-up, you can’t go wrong with either of these platforms.
Try setting up a sample account on Blogger, or install Wordpress on your own server and play around with them for a few minutes. Chances are you’ll be able to get the hang of it immediately and you will be well on your way to becoming the owner of a successful corporate blog that is completely tricked out and reader friendly.

Most people understand the basics when it comes to blogging or corporate blogging, but unless you have been trained in SEO, you probably do not understand what goes on behind the scenes. For example, are you aware of how backlinks are vital to the success of your corporate blog? If you are wondering how backlinks are going to benefit your corporate blog, and more importantly, how you can get the most out of them, keep reading:
The first thing that you need to understand is what a back link is. Any time a link is created to your corporate blog from another blog or website, you have a back link. Google and other search engines look at these back links as a testament to the effectiveness of your blog, because if other websites and blogs are linking to yours, then yours must have value of some sort. In other words, if you want your blog to build up popularity in the highest ranking search engines, you need to find ways to have links created to your blog from other places across the internet.
There are essentially a couple of different ways to create back links to your website, all of which can benefit your corporate blog.
1 – Link exchanges build back links.
Strike deals with other bloggers in your niche or industry. If you link to them in your blog or on your website, they will link to you in exchange. The more popular their websites are the more important and vital these links will be.
2 – Link to your own blog entries elsewhere.
Comment in other blogs in your industry and post a link back to your blog. Submit articles to submission sites with a link back to your blog. The more links that you create that point back to your blog, the higher your search engine page rank is going to be when Google finds these links and then connects them back to your website.
3 – Create links to your blog from your website, and then to your blog from your website.
Every link to your blog is a valuable back link, even though some back links are not as valuable as other. Google and other search engines do actually count how many links are pointing to your website as a reference for how popular your website is, and how valuable your content is. When Google sees a large number of links pointing to your corporate blog, especially when they come from a wide variety of different websites, that is how the search engine will know that your corporate blog is providing high quality content that offers value to other people on the internet.
4 – By offering valuable content, other readers and bloggers will naturally find and link to your content.
The more value you provide, the more other bloggers will want to talk about your blog.
In other words, if you want search engines to acknowledge that your corporate blog offers value, you need to build back links.

December 9th, 2008 — customer base, search engine
You’ve got a website… Fantastic! Are customers finding you? Without a blog or advertising program, probably not. Having a telephone number is not very helpful if you aren’t listed a phone book (or online equivalent). The website is the same way – except that the “phone book” has been replaced with the search engine (with Google being the best known example). Millions of people are using search engines everyday to find what they want. It could be anything from finding a lawyer, a window installation person, or managing your finances better. If you rank higher, you’ll get more customers.
Let’s pretend you are Acme Corporation. While you’re business is doing okay, you really only have one customer: Wile E. Coyote. He comes to you faithfully every day in his attempt to capture the Road Runner. Problem is, he only buys a couple of anvils a month – you need to sell more. What if all the millions of people searching Google for anvils found your website? If you have a quality anvil at a fair price, you might expect a phone call, a sale, and a new customer – hopefully as good as Wile.
The difference may seem subtle, but it’s important. The people searching for the Acme Corporation directly are already likely to find your website. These people are also likely your existing customers or someone who has already been referred by someone else. The person searching for anvils doesn’t know you and won’t find you unless you tell the search engines that you are an expert on anvils.
How do you become an expert on anvils? You give the search engines what they want. The search engines are looking for four things:
- Content – Without content, search engines would be out of business. If you write about anvils a lot, the search engines are going to notice.
- Updated Content – It’s not enough to just write a batch of articles on anvils. You could put 100 articles up on anvils tomorrow and the search engines might be impressed. However, after a couple of weeks, they’d realize that you aren’t providing them with anything new and gravitate to another site on anvils.
- Page Layout – There’s a science to telling the search engines what’s important and what is not important on your website. Search engines really appreciate it when you help them out and highlight the important parts. This is often called Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in the industry.
- Links From Others – If other websites link to your articles about anvils, the search engines count that as a vote in your favor. These votes are tallied and weighed with the other factors
A well-architected, corporate blog is the best way to score big with the first three. Some customers may find that’s all they need to become “anvil experts.” We do provide services and strategies for the getting links from others making Buildify your a complete solution.
