Frequently Asked Questions about Corporate Blogging

Some frequently asked questions...If you are completely new to blogging, you may find that you have a lot of questions and at times, it can be hard to find the answers. We’ve compiled the most common issues facing new corporate bloggers and supplied the answers to these problems below.

1. Is this going to make my company more profitable?

Yes and no. It is important that you go into corporate blogging with the right mindset. Yes, it can be a very powerful means of promotion, but it’s going to take a lot of time and success will not happen overnight. The main reason that most companies get into corporate blogging is not to increase sales directly, but to improve their search engine rankings. Often, the result of a better ranking is more sales, but you should not view your corporate blog as a mythical tool that will rake in millions of dollars in sales.

2. What blogging platform should I use?

This is a tougher question because the answer is a bit nebulous. Everyone is going to have their preference, but overall, the most powerful and customizable platform has to be Wordpress. You’ll have two main options with Wordpress. First, you can set up an account on Wordpress.com, where they will host and install your blog for you, or you can download a free copy at Wordpress.org and install it on your own server.

For those that don’t have a lot of experience, the hosted version works quite well, despite its limitations. For those that need more options with plugins and configuration, installing it at the server level is the best option.

3. How do I promote my blog?

Once again, there is no set answer to this question, but there are several techniques that can be used successfully. First, you’ve got to make your blog easy to find on your own corporate site. Next, you’ll need to start promoting it in two different ways, directly and indirectly.

Direct promotion involves submitting your blog posts to social bookmarking and networking sites. Indirect promotion involves leaving comments on other blogs and leaving a link to your own blog inside. This should be used in moderation and your comments should always be related to the post and not blatant promotional attempts.

4. Is corporate blogging worth the effort?

Absolutely, but only if you are willing to spend extra time promoting your blog. If not, then it is a waste of your time. A good corporate blog will take a few months to catch on and you’ve got to be willing to take the time to really work on creating great posts and promoting them. Success is not going to happen instantly, and it will take work. However, you can see a big difference in your main site’s traffic and in public opinion when you really work on your blog.

Corporate blogging is not for everyone. If you’re interested in getting started, it is best to remember that it will take a lot of time and effort. For those willing to make that sacrifice, success is just around the corner.

Getting a Better Corporate Blog Ranking pt 1

directoryIf you ask ten different bloggers about the best way to increase your search engine ranking for your corporate blog, you will certainly get at least ten different answers. There are a myriad of different ways that you can increase your blog’s search engine rankings in the top search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN. The best approach is to find a number of strategies that will work for you, implementing them one at a time and combining them for the best possible results. Here is a look at some of the best strategies for success with generating better blog rankings for your corporate blog.

1 – Target Audience.

If you have not done so already, you need to build yourself a list of specific phrases and keywords that your target audience is specifically looking for online to find what you are providing. Blog ranking is only useful if you are ranking for the right keywords and key phrases.

2 – Posting Schedule.

Write your blog content often, and make sure to use your keyword list as a guide for all of the content that you produce. This will help to make sure that you are improving your search engine rankings for a much wider range of different phrases, which is going to lead to more traffic in the long term.

3 – Get Links.

When you add quality content to your blog fairly regularly over time, you are also turning your blog into a resource that is much more useful to its readers. This will help you to attract links from other webmasters for increased exposure in search engines, increasing your link popularity in the process.

4 -Directories.

Add your blog to web directories in various sources on the internet. This is another excellent strategy for increasing your link property and for seeing an improvement in ranking as well. You should conduct some basic research to figure out which directories will offer the best value for the cost.

5 -Recycle or upcycle with focus.

Re-purpose old content in order to get more bang out of your buck. You can compile and revise older blog posts in order to turn them into longer articles. You can take these articles and get more out of them still by using them to increase your ranking, your visibility and your blog traffic as well. Start submitting articles to article submission websites, providing a link that connects back to your blog for an increase in visibility overall. You should also consider submitting your articles to large scale industry websites within the industry that you operate in. Many websites will consider publishing quality articles, and the majority of them will be willing to include a link back to your website at the end of the article. More links and more content on the web leads to better blog rankings, hands down.

These are only five strategies and there are plenty more to consider when it comes to increasing your blog rankings and getting the most out of your blog generation strategies.

Quick and Dirty Tips for Effective Corporate Blogging, pt 3

conversationThis is part three in a series about tips for good corporate blogging. We touched on three tips in both the first part and the second part of this series – Now here are another handful of tips for your consideration.

- 7 – Write clearly and concisely when it comes to everything that you publish in your blog.

You should be aiming to craft short and to-the-point questions. You should only be touching on one single concept per sentence in order to keep the attention of your readers. Avoid writing using double speak or technical terms and jargon that may persuade your readers not to stay. Your sentences should be simple and straight forward, rather than forcing your readers to think hard about the meaning that you are trying to get at. Use specific punctuation marks, including dashes and commas, as liberally as you possibly can. In some ways, it may be ideal to spoon feed your content to your readers to make sure that no part of the meaning is lost, and that your readers come away feeling confident about what they have read.

- 8 – Use keywords as often as you possibly can when writing in your blog post, but only where they feel natural.

Using relevant keywords often when writing your blog posts will help you stay on purpose, and they will also appeal to the search engines. Your search engine rankings will go up, and you will likely enjoy more traffic as a result. This is one of the reasons why your blog should have a solid purpose statement before you begin to write in it. The more clearly that you are able to convey the purpose behind your blog, the more consistently you will be able to deliver messages that are on task and on target with the niche or industry that you are attempting to sell. The more often your preferred keywords show up, the more likely you will be to garner improvements in search engine ranking and results.

- 9 – Write conversationally when you write in your blog.

Rather than writing with a formal edge to your writing, you should be writing as if you are speaking to an old friend. Your blog should be friendly and conversational, but only as long as you’re still providing information and value in each of the blog posts that you create. There is nothing wrong with implementing common expressions from speech in your blog posts. For example, you can use terms like these:

“Hey guys”,

“Go Figure!”,

“Now I’m asking you”,

“Gotta love it!”

“What’s up?”

You should also keep the age of your average reader in mind when determining the “voice” of your blog entries. Ending each blog post with “TTYL” for “Talk To You Later” may not go over as well for certain audiences as for others. Just keep in mind that the rules for conversation in a blog are not the same as writing content for other purposes, as things are much more casual and conversational when writing and communicating in a blog.

Growing Your Business with a Company Blog

Grow your company with a corporate blog.If you are looking for a way to grow your business but you don’t have a lot of available resources at your disposal, a corporate blog is one of the easiest means of accomplishing this goal. The set up costs are minimal and with the right management, you can easily achieve the same results with a blog that you would with an expensive ad campaign. The key is patience when it comes to corporate blogging. You won’t achieve instant readership but over time, you’ll be laying that foundation that will help your business grow exponentially.

One of the best reasons to start a blog is that it provides your company with a face that the public can see. Usually, companies are perceived as not caring about the little guy and generally being faceless. When you have a blog, you are breaking through that stereotype and allowing your customers a chance to see the real people behind the company. This alone is worth the effort of setting up a corporate blog. By becoming a personality, you will be creating brand loyalty without even trying.

Next, corporate blogging is one of the easiest ways to increase your search engine rankings and as such your discoverability. You need to make it easy for new customers to find you, and while your static site may accomplish this to some degree, you will be limited if you don’t add new content on a regular basis. Many companies just don’t have a need to keep adding content, but a blog can provide a means of accomplishing this without taking away from your overall site plan.

As an example, let’s say that we have a company that sells sports equipment. They’ve made their site and they’ve added their shopping cart and now there is nothing left to do. If they don’t have a lot of new products, their cart isn’t going to change and customers will have nothing new to see and little reason to keep coming back.

If this same company adds a blog to their site, they are providing their customers with a reason to visit the site every single day. This blog could be used in this example to discuss sporting events, the latest news as well as company updates. By integrating this into the products that the company sells, they can reach yet another goal. For example, let’s say that the company blogs about the Super Bowl. They can mention items from their football line in the post to give readers a chance to purchase related merchandise.

This is perhaps the best example of how easy it can be to grow your business with a corporate blog. It has all of the items necessary for success – Frequent content, related merchandise and a personable approach.

To make sure that your blog succeeds and contains all of these elements, it is a good idea to work with a blog management company that specializes in guiding companies towards having the perfect corporate blog.

Getting a Better Corporate Blog Ranking pt 2

hyperspaceAsk a dozen different bloggers for strategies on getting a better corporate blog ranking, and you will get a different opinion for everyone that you ask. There are a number of ways to increase your blog’s search engine rankings in the top search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN, as we touched on in Part 1 of this blog series. The best approach for you to take is to find a number of different strategies that will work for you, combining them for the best possible results. Here is a look at some more of the best strategies for success with generating better blog rankings for your corporate blog.

6 – Internal Links

Link between all of your different posts any time that it makes sense for you to do so. Make sure that keywords are included in the links. This is excellent for your readers because it provides usability, and it is also excellent for the search engines by providing visibility.

7 – Press Release.

When your business blog is offering plenty of excellent content, you should take the time to publish a press release to announce it. Make sure that the press release includes good information about your blog, and offers a link so that readers can find it. This will not only add to the link popularity that was mentioned in Part 1 of this series, but it will also help you improve your blog rankings over all in search engines and among your readers.

8 – Networking.

Take the time to compile a list of websites that relate to your niche or your industry. Contact whoever runs or publishes the website and recommend your blog as a potential resource for the people reading their websites. If you have posted high quality content on a regular basis, most of these website owners would be more than happy to recommend your blog as a resource for visitors to their websites.

9 – Professional Help.

Consider hiring a professional SEO consultant that can help you with any of the strategies that you are having difficulty putting into action. SEO experts do exactly this for a living – They live to help increase the search engine ranking for websites of all kinds, and they can benefit you and your corporate blogging endeavor as well.

10 -Networking with Links.

Network with other bloggers that operate in the same industry as you. Linking up with other relevant blogs is an excellent way to share readers as well as rankings. A little bit of occasional linking with other blogs and websites in your industry will help your blog and will allow you to facilitate communication not only on your corporate blog, but elsewhere as well, which is a great way to improve your search engine ranking for your blog.

These are only five strategies and there are plenty more to consider when it comes to increasing your blog rankings and getting the most out of your blog generation strategies.

Corporate Blogging Demystified

Keep typing! For some, the premise of corporate blogging is a bit strange. It’s hard to know when a corporate blog may be right for you and it’s also difficult to know just what you’re supposed to do with one. Here’s an easy guide to help you get your blog started the right way.

Purpose

First, the main purpose of a corporate blog can be divided into three part: Attracting New Customers, Improving Search Engine Rankings and Building a Stronger Brand. All three play into one another and you shouldn’t have one without the other. With the right kind of blog, you can accomplish all three things without difficulty. This does mean however that you will need to work on a few things when you are getting started.

In order to improve your SEO, your blog’s posts should contain keywords that are relevant to your business. This means making a list of what you would like to have your site listed under with search engines and then making sure that you mention these keywords throughout your posts. This should start producing results within about two weeks to two months, depending on how often you update your blog.

Building a stronger brand is accomplished by creating a relationship with your readers that is both endearing and professional. You’ll need to walk that fine line between having engaging prose and getting too friendly. It takes a little while, but most get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Attracting new customers means that you will need to market your new blog. Advertise it on your site, promote it with social bookmarking sites and you may even consider running a PPC campaign to promote it. This will take a little time to work, but you should be able to start attracting more new customers as soon as your blog posts are indexed.

Keeping up The Good Work

In order to reinforce all of the above, you need to make sure that you are publishing your blog on a regular basis. If you can’t put up a new post every day, you should try for at least once a week. The more often you publish, the greater your chances are of getting a good ranking with search engines. Your site will be indexed more often and your readers will have more to keep them occupied.

Running a corporate blog usually entails quite a bit of time, so you may want to consider hiring a blog management service. They can assist you with promotion, more frequent posting and handling the day to day needs of a corporate blog. This frees up your staff to focus on their own tasks instead of getting caught up with the blog. In some cases, a blog can take a few minutes to manage, or a few hours. Either way, it is helpful to have someone else there to help you through the entire process to ensure that your blog is a successful as it can be and that you achieve your goals.
