March 17th, 2010 — audience, comments, content, public relations
Right now, thousands of companies are using corporate blogging as a means of reaching out to new customers. This means that the field is incredibly crowded and getting more so every day. How do you get your blog to stand out from the crowd? It can be complicated at times, but there are several techniques that you can use to make sure that your blog gets noticed and that you beat your competitors.
1. Put a name and a face on your blog.
Don’t make the mistake of anonymous blogging. Many businesses owners make this mistake because they are not willing to put their employees or themselves out in the public eye. The result is a static blog that is boring and unpersonable. You will need to give a name, even if it is just your first name if you want your blog to be successful. A picture is also useful, but if you don’t feel comfortable with that, you’re going to have to use your personality to create that picture in the minds of your readers.
2. Blog about the right topics.
The blogs that get read find a way to mix current events in with their regular company news. The more topics you cover, the better your chances are of being discovered. Read through your competitor’s blogs and see what they are doing. Find out how you can do it better. It’s ok to have a few posts on your blog that may not be directly related to what you do. This helps build up your readership. However, it is important to find some way to relate every post you make to your company or your industry. Otherwise, your readers could get confused.
3. Allow your readers to comment.
It can be pretty scary to open up your blog to comments from your readers. However, this is a risk that pays off by allowing your readers to feel as though they are a part of what you are doing. If you do allow comments, it is alright to moderate them to avoid having a disaster occur, but you should allow some freedom of discussion. Many businesses make the mistake of talking at their readers instead of talking to them. By using comments, you can avoid this common mistake and ensure that your readers will feel that they matter to you.
4. Have fun.
The most common problem that all corporate bloggers face is that their industry may be a bit boring. There is a way to have fun with your posts, stay relevant to your topic and stay professional. If your blog makes you snore, what is it doing to your readers. Change it up every now and again and keep it lighthearted.
In order to avoid many of these pitfalls, it is a good idea to work with someone that is familiar with blog management. You’ll be able to get the benefit of their expertise and they can help you leverage your blog for success.

March 7th, 2010 — RSS Feed, content, customer trust, social bookmarking sites
If you are putting together an RSS feed for your corporate blog, you may be wondering what way is the best way to deliver that RSS Feed. Should you use full text so that your subscribers can read the entire post in their feed reader without having to click on any links, or should you use a post excerpt so that readers are forced to visit your corporate blog for the rest of the story?
If you subscribe to RSS feeds that relate to blogging or internet marketing subjects, then you will probably discover that the full text feed philosophy is the one that wins a lot of debates on the subject. On the other hand, you may have noticed that many popular news sites like ESPN, AP News and CNN are using the excerpt method instead. Some of these news sites only display the headlines in their RSS feed and do not show any of the story until you visit the actual website. So which method is the right method for your corporate blog?
The real answer to this question is that the best method is whatever best suits your business model.
For example:
Major news websites and sports websites have the same business model that they have always used. The more people they have reading their articles and content, the more they can end up charging for advertising. For this reason, their primary objective is simply to drive people into their websites so that they can retain the highest readership numbers possible to reach the highest possible advertising rates in the process. By offering only a short excerpt or only a headline forces the reader to either click to come in and read more, or to move on.
Is this how you want to regard your readers?
One of the number one goals for most internet marketers and bloggers is to gain the trust of the largest possible audience. Your readers are not only potential customers, but they are also your supporters. Because it is so difficult to obtain high readership numbers, doesn’t it make sense to try to retain your readers at any cost? Most people like to read all of their websites in a single place which is what RSS aggregators are really all about. If you make reading easier for your readers, they will appreciate it more than you realize.
Does the monetization strategy for your corporate blogging effort depend on attracting viewers to your website? The excerpt feed method may be best if you depend on people actually coming to your website, but it takes a lot of traffic to make a living in this manner so you should not necessarily depend on it.
Another consideration to make is this:
Does your website have enough authority to draw people in just based on headlines or small excerpts alone? Even if you are an authority in the field, it is unlikely that your blog has gained enough experience, credibility and exposure to rival the attraction websites like CNN can generate. You should not hold anything back from your readers, so give them everything that you can in your RSS feed. If you give your readers exactly what they subscribed to, you will benefit from an increase in RSS subscribers, more posts getting bookmarks on sites like Digg, Delicio.us, Technorati and StumbleUpon, more viewer comments, and more viewers talking about your blog in theirs.

March 4th, 2010 — audience, content, public relations, publicity, web traffic
Since corporate blogs are so popular, there are quite a few myths that go along with them. Before you even start your own blog, it is important to be able to separate fact from fiction so that you go into this process with the right expectations. You can really learn a lot from these myths, and you’ll know what you should not be doing on your blog.
1. Build it and they will automatically come.
This is completely untrue. You need to work to build your readership and it may take months. Unless you are already very popular and get a lot of daily traffic, you’re going to have to work hard to build up that audience. It is very easy to get discouraged with this process, but if you can stick with it, you’ll be greatly increasing your chances for a very popular blog.
2. Comments are a bad idea.
No one really wants to give their customers an open mic, especially if the company already has a history of customer service issues and a bad reputation. However, comments, when moderated, can lead to an open and frank discussion that is very useful for your business. In addition, it gives the impression that you really do want to hear from your readers. Commetning on blogs is a very big part of many blog reader’s lives and they will want this opportunity.
If you do have a problem with disgruntled customers, then comments may not be a good idea, especially if you let them go live without first moderating them. Try to weigh the pros and cons and then once you have made your decision stick with it. It is better to have never allowed comments, than to have allowed them and revoked them down the road. This will be perceived badly and will give the public the impression that you are trying to hide something.
The best answer is to set all comments to moderation, which means that you will get to read them and approve them before they go live. There may be a few grumblings about this, but overall, it is much safer than allowing comments to go live immediately after they are written.
3. It’s ok to have fun and be strange on your blog.
You still are representing your company, so you’ll need to find that balance between being engaging and being stupid. You don’t want your company to get dragged through the mud because of one ill thought out post. Make sure that you never post anything that could result in someone thinking less of you or your company. It’s fine to have fun with your blog, but never forget that it needs to be professional.
Blogging is tough, and many companies prefer to hire someone to help them through the entire process. A blog management company can assist you in determining the future path for your blog as well as with marketing and daily maintenance. They make it easy to have a successful corporate blog.

February 20th, 2010 — RSS Feed, keywords, search engine, social bookmarking sites, statistics, web traffic
The sad reality is that every year thousands of corporate blog die a quiet death and the only one that notices is their owner. Whether it is through a lack of attention, or simply an inability to find the right audience, keeping a blog alive can be a difficult task. If you are struggling to figure out whether or not it’s time to let your blog die a natural death, there are a few things to think about first. Quitting may be your best option, at least when you consider how much time and money you spend, but it should also be your last option.
Before you decide to throw in the towel, it’s a good idea to give it one last ditch effort. Take a month and set aside some extra time to really promote your blog. Remember, the people who succeed are the ones that held on for just a little bit longer. You could be missing out on thousands of readers if you quit too early. Here are some quick tips to help you form your last ditch effort.
1. Optimize Your Keywords.
Take the time to go through your posts and optimize them completely. Don’t forget the post titles either since this is very important. Post new content as well that is optimized and let the search engines re-index your site. This may help bump you up a few spots in the results page.
2. Start Submitting Your Feed to RSS Directories.
This strategy can work in many different ways. First, you are getting your feed out there in front of more people, and second, you are building quality backlinks, which in turn help your search engine placement. Aim to submit your feed to at least 50 directories to give yourself a good chance.
3. Write Posts That Get Attention and Promote Them.
Many times, the only reason a blog fails to find a readership is simply due to the fact that it is boring. Read through the front page of Digg and other social bookmarking sites and see what people are interested in. Write content that is applicable to your own site, but still follows this format and then submit it to these sites.
4. Use StumbleUpon.
While the advertising service here is hit or miss, the regular aspect of the site can bring in huge results, depending on your topic. Set up an account and stumble your site. You should be able to pick up at least a few new readers right away and over time, this will keep occurring.
Still not working? Or you were spending too much time blogging and not enough on your core business.

February 18th, 2010 — Buildify, advertisment, money, sales
If you have a blog, then you are already on the right track to boosting the income of your business. Blogs are incredibly useful for people who are looking to make money online, either as self employed individuals, business owners, or anyone who is just looking to make cash online. Blogs can help businesses build up their careers in quick and easy ways, eliminating years worth of frustration in many cases. Blogs are, simply put, tools for instant publication. Blogs do not have to be online journals, as there is so much more than you can do with them. So when you hear the word ‘blog’ you should be thinking ‘instant publication’ above all else.
Here are some ways that you can boost your income by writing in a corporate blog or business blog online:
1 – More blogs and more blog entries leads to more money.
You can have multiple blogs, especially if each of your blogs has a different purpose. Look at the Microsoft blogging network for example. Every blog has a unique writer and a unique purpose. Just keep in mind that blogs take a while to develop readership. Create one blog, develop it for a while, then create another blog and develop it independently of the first for more sales and business.
2 – Use your blogs and your blog entries to sell yourself, and to sell your products and the services that you offer.
Your blog will be what allows you to become more visible online. It will literally be the premier tool that helps you to build a name online. Create articles and other helpful content for your blog, and your readers will begin to regard you as an expert on the subject that you’re selling. The more information that you provide, the more advantageous your blog will become, because your readers will respect you and will want to buy from you.
3 – Every blog post should be regarded as an advertisement for you and your company.
Every single blog that you write in, and every single blog post that you write for these blogs should be an advertisement for you, even when you’re not directly selling a product or a service. If you want to build credibility and really sell yourself online, blogging is the tool that can make this happen. These blogs show your readers that you are an expert, and readers want to hire experts and buy products from experts, so if you show that you know your stuff within your industry, your blog will be what convinces customers to purchase from you.
Blogging is an enormously important way to reach out to new readers and to attract new customers because it allows you to establish yourself as an expert in your field or industry, and it allows you to indirectly sell your products or services for an increase in business.

February 16th, 2010 — Buildify, blog design, networking, promotion, publicity
If you plan on writing a blog and using it for any purpose other than your own, then you absolutely need to be willing to find ways to effectively publicize it. Some people will tell you that all you need to do is write in your blog and then the traffic will magically arrive, but this is untrue. If nobody knows about their blog, how will they know how to find you?
1 – The first step in learning how to publicize your corporate blog is perhaps the simplest:
You need to simply be willing to talk about your blog, telling everyone you know about it. You shouldn’t randomly tell people you don’t know, but if you share your blog with your friends, family members, co-workers and colleagues, you will already be building a strong readership that will only grow with time.
2 – Use your e-mail signature to tell even more people about your blog.
Your e-mail signature is a small block of text that is automatically appended to the e-mail messages that you send. You can include information about your blog in your e-mail signature and then everyone who receives an e-mail from you will also receive a blog link. Experiment with different types of text and see what changes your traffic numbers and what doesn’t.
3 – Create links from your website.
If you have a website that you are trying to “push” through your blog, then strive not to let it be hard to find. Link prominently from your website to your blog, and from your blog to your website. You should have a link from your website directly to the main page of your blog, and when you reference your company in your blog, you should link back to your website. It should never be difficult to find one or the other, otherwise your readers will give up and move on.
4 – List your blog in every place that you list or advertise your website.
This means online materials and offline materials as well. Put your blog on your letterheads, your business cards, your advertisements, direct mail marketing efforts and even your fax header page. The more you list your blog in your marketing, advertising and communicating materials, the more exposure your blog will get. It really does not get any simpler than this.
5 – Enter into carnivals, which are an excellent way to publicize your corporate blog.
These are best of lists that feature posts on a certain topic, and they have an excellent viral marketing aspect that makes this method of blogging and marketing through your blog extremely important. If you want one single blog post to work real wonders when it comes to advertising your blog, then it is essential that you seek out blog carnivals that you can participate in.

How to Get Blog Readers Many people start blogging and just assume their blog will have readers. Unless you went out and purchased an already established blogs, the chances are that you just recently launched your blog with only a single loyal reader, your own self. Maybe you received a few hits a couple of days later when you began to tell the people you knew about the blog, but that’s probably as far as readership has been able to go so far. All is not lost, however, as there are some pretty awesome techniques that you can employ when you are ready to increase loyalty and readership numbers. These tips are especially useful for brand new bloggers who do not have much readership to speak of. If you want to get the ball rolling, these tips can be especially useful.
As each of these tips builds on the last, it would be especially wise for you to begin at number one, and slowly move down the list accordingly. Each technique will build upon the last in some way, allowing for you to create some momentum in building your membership base. Eventually you will establish enough of a level of momentum that you will gain some sort of traction. You can easily build up a readership of 500 people or more per day, meaning that you will no longer be required to boost your readership as diligently as before. Instead, your loyal readers will do a lot of the work for you, getting the word out about your blog via word of mouth.
Without further ado, here are the techniques that will help you build readership for your blog in no time at all:
1 – First and foremost, you should begin by writing at least five major or “pillar” articles.
Pillar articles are most commonly tutorial style articles that are designed to teach something to your audience that they can use in their everyday lives. Generally these pillar articles are longer than the average 500-word article, and they are generally full of practical advice and other tips. Pillar articles are regarded as excellent, practical how-to lessons or articles. Articles like this stay current and over real insight and value to the reader. The more pillar articles you are able to produce for your blog, the better off you will be because these types of blog posts never go out of style, and provide value to every single new reader that visit your blog.
2 – At a bare minimum you should be writing one new blog post every single day.
Not every single one of your blog posts needs to be a pillar blog post, but you should still work on having at least five pillar posts at any time so you can continue to keep your blog fresh with new content. You should also implement news pieces and other short article style blog posts. The important thing to consider when it comes to posting in your blog is that you need to demonstrate to all first time visitors that you do take the time to post in your blog every single day.

February 5th, 2010 — advertisment, audience, blog design, money, search engine, social bookmarking sites
Once you’re ready to set up your own corporate blog, you’ll need to figure out what your audience is since this will determine how you write your blog. If you already have a set group of customers that you feel will be reading your blog, you’re already pretty much set. However, if you want to reach out to a new audience, there are a few things that you will have to do first.
1. What is your demographic?
This is actually quite important when it comes to writing your blog. A younger crowd is going to want to see a blog that is more fun and integrated with social networking features, while an older crowd may feel more comfortable with a more staid blog. It will really depend, but these are some wide guidelines to help you. If you don’t know your demographic, it’s best to shoot for the middle of the road when it comes to style and the types of features that you offer on your blog.
2. How do you plan to find new readers?
Once you know your demographic, this will determine how you go about attracting new readers to your blog. For those under 35, promoting your blog on social bookmarking sites such as Digg will deliver your audience to you. However, these readers are very savvy and don’t appreciate over commercialized posts. You’ll need to learn how to walk that fine line between that and getting your message across.
Other readers can be reached through a PPC ad campaign targeting keywords that are well suited to your blog. This is a little expensive and most companies prefer not to have to spend money to promote their blog, but this is a good method. A secondary choice would be to release a press release detailing what your new blog will be doing.
3. The third option is just to let your readers discover you through search engines.
This will take the longest amount of time when it comes to building up your readership and it is a bit hit or miss. You’ll need to be very patient if you’re trying to grow your blog using only this method and you may never have the results you’re looking for.
The best bet is to combine all of these marketing tools into one to help you target your key audience. Once you’ve done that, word of mount will help you continue to grow your blog. Remember that you’ll need to keep writing compelling content if you want your audience to stick with you. A blog management company can assist you in writing posts that will get attention and they are also very useful when it comes to promoting your blog and handling the every day tasks that are associated with it. If you don’t have a lot of time to devote to building your blog’s audience, this is a very good solution that works well for most companies, big or small.

January 28th, 2010 — RSS Feed, advertisment, brand awareness, goals, planning, platform, web traffic
Right now, one of the best ways to reach out to your customer base and increase brand recognition is through the use of a corporate blog. However, many companies aren’t sure where they should start and how they can take advantage of this trend. Here are some tips that make corporate blogging easy for any size company.
1. Plan your blog’s path out in advance.
It’s not enough just to create a blog, throw up a few posts and hope it will work. You will need to come up with a clear plan on what you plan to talk about with your blog, how often you will post and a general list of topics that you want to cover. By taking care of this in advance, you’ll be able to avoid a lot of the common pitfalls that make corporate blogs fail.
2. Design your blog to match your corporate site.
This sounds like a given, but it is actually a very common error. If you’re working on branding, you need to create that factor of instant recognition. By integrating your blog’s design into your site design you will be able to easily create that recognition. Many companies try to get crazy with wild themes or simply fail to have any sort of visual link between their blogs and their sites. This is a mistake that can be easily avoided.
3. Use an RSS management system.
Most blogs will have an RSS feed that will allow readers to receive instant updates whenever you publish new content. There are numerous services out there, such as Feedburner, that take this to a whole new level, providing you with tracking, format management and many other features. You can use these statistics to help shape your blog by finding out which posts are the most popular, which ones don’t receive much traffic as well as your overall readership. Pageviews aren’t enough when you’re trying to see if your blog is successful. You need to have that extra information at your fingertips.
4. Use a platform that is conducive to easy and frequent blogging.
If you are using blogging software that is complicated chances are you won’t want to post on a frequent basis. Likewise, you don’t want to have to spend a lot of time training your blogger to use the system. Go with an application that allows a simple type and post action to make it easier.
5. You’ve got to promote your blog.
If you don’t spend the time promoting your new blog, you may as well not have one. Take the time to use social networking sites and other avenues to build your blog readership.
A blog management company can help you accomplish all of these tasks and many more. Busy company owners find that having this kind of help makes corporate blogging incredibly easy and more successful. You will be able to leverage their experience and expertise to create a stellar blog that gets read.

January 25th, 2010 — advertisment, content, public relations, web traffic
One of the most common mistakes that corporate blog owners make is turning their blog into a glorified sales letter. While there is a place for sales copy on a blog, it should only be used when absolutely necessary, and never as the main form of communication. No one really likes being “sold to,” and if you are noticing that there has been a drop off in your readership, you may be overselling your blog a bit. Here are some signs to watch out for to keep your blog from turning into a sales letter.
1. Product placement ratios go up.
There is nothing wrong with promoting your products in your corporate blog. In fact, that’s why many bloggers decide to get into this form of communication. However, if you are writing more about your products and worrying less about creating a relationship with your readers, you may end up in a bad spot. Try to keep your product placement ratio to one for every three to four posts. It’s best to use soft selling techniques, rather than blanket attempts to promote your products.
2. Your blog posts become impersonal.
Even the best copywriters have issues with overselling, and it’s all too easy for a corporate blog owner to fall into this trap. The harder you sell your products, the more removed you become from your audience. Again, try to find that balance between actual communication and selling your merchandise. In order to keep that relationship strong, consider posting more about how a product will benefit your readers, rather than throwing it in their face.
3. You start to get complaints.
If you have gotten one or two complaints that your blog is simply selling too much, this is an indication that you may need to think hard about your posting procedures. Those one or two people are only the ones that took the time to write and you have to consider just how many people walked away, instead of contacting you. You are writing your corporate blog for your audience first and foremost, to set up that relationship of trust – not to endlessly pitch your products at them.
4. You notice your page views declining.
This is a common sign that something is wrong with your blog. It could be a natural turn of events, or it could be a sign that you are drifting from your initial purpose. Once you start to develop that relationship with your readers, it’s tempting to try to monetize them by selling your products. However, it’s a fine line to cross over and it’s all too easy to end up losing readers as a result. Monitor your stats and see if you are noticing any drop-offs when you post promotional material.
While corporate blogs are a powerful medium for product placement, they should not be abused. Always keep your main focus in front of you and remember that the relationship with your customer and reader has to come first.
