Boost Your Income with Blog Secrets

20sIf you have a blog, then you are already on the right track to boosting the income of your business. Blogs are incredibly useful for people who are looking to make money online, either as self employed individuals, business owners, or anyone who is just looking to make cash online. Blogs can help businesses build up their careers in quick and easy ways, eliminating years worth of frustration in many cases. Blogs are, simply put, tools for instant publication. Blogs do not have to be online journals, as there is so much more than you can do with them. So when you hear the word ‘blog’ you should be thinking ‘instant publication’ above all else.

Here are some ways that you can boost your income by writing in a corporate blog or business blog online:

1 – More blogs and more blog entries leads to more money.

You can have multiple blogs, especially if each of your blogs has a different purpose. Look at the Microsoft blogging network for example. Every blog has a unique writer and a unique purpose. Just keep in mind that blogs take a while to develop readership. Create one blog, develop it for a while, then create another blog and develop it independently of the first for more sales and business.

2 – Use your blogs and your blog entries to sell yourself, and to sell your products and the services that you offer.

Your blog will be what allows you to become more visible online. It will literally be the premier tool that helps you to build a name online. Create articles and other helpful content for your blog, and your readers will begin to regard you as an expert on the subject that you’re selling. The more information that you provide, the more advantageous your blog will become, because your readers will respect you and will want to buy from you.

3 – Every blog post should be regarded as an advertisement for you and your company.

Every single blog that you write in, and every single blog post that you write for these blogs should be an advertisement for you, even when you’re not directly selling a product or a service. If you want to build credibility and really sell yourself online, blogging is the tool that can make this happen. These blogs show your readers that you are an expert, and readers want to hire experts and buy products from experts, so if you show that you know your stuff within your industry, your blog will be what convinces customers to purchase from you.

Blogging is an enormously important way to reach out to new readers and to attract new customers because it allows you to establish yourself as an expert in your field or industry, and it allows you to indirectly sell your products or services for an increase in business.

Microsoft Blogs Review

Reading and reviewing corporate blogs from other companies is a great way to learn a little bit more about your own blog. Microsoft has a large community of blogs, and a wide variety of bloggers writing in numerous blogs within this community. There are a number of employee blogs in the Microsoft blog community, which is insightful and interesting, but many of the community blogs are rich in technical jargon which is useful to those who are more tech savvy but not necessarily useful to those who are not used to the lingo.

There are a lot of blogs that are from Microsoft or about Microsoft, and many focus on technical advances relating to the Microsoft software. However, there is also a higher education blog that is part of the Microsoft community which relates to programs that are being integrated into universities for students. For example, I read about a software program called Business Intelligence and how Microsoft Performance Point is going to bring benefits to universities and the students who attend them, which was a pleasant subject to read about.

Because so many of the Microsoft blogs are technical in nature, they do not get many comments from readers despite being updated rather frequently. Most of the blogs in this network do not encourage dialog and do not appear to be very engaging. Let’s break down some of the details of these blogs in a purely number way.

Ease of Finding – 9 out of 10.

Once I typed “Microsoft” into Google’s search engine, a bunch of different Microsoft blogs came up. Blogs can also be found through the Microsoft website as well.

Frequency – 6 out of 10 –

These blogs are updated pretty frequently, but not on any real schedule that I can discern. I was finding some blogs with entries that were a few days old, and nothing new or fresh despite plenty to say.

Engaging Writing – 5 out of 10 –

The writing in many of these blogs is really only going to relate to tech savvy readers, or people who are really serious about finding out more information about Microsoft. This writing may be somewhat engaging, but it caters to heavily to a specific audience and leaves out a lot of potential readers in the process.

Relevance – 6 out of 10 –

Blogs in this network are highly catered to people who are seriously into technology, and as a result, they really are not relevant to the general public as a whole.

Focus – 8 out of 10 –

Perhaps too focused, but the focus here is good.

Honesty – 7 out of 10 –

The technology and software blogs appear honest, but I am less sure about the employee run blogs, giving these guys a solid 7.

Interactivity – 3 out of 10 –

These blogs are not very interactive, as they spend no time facilitating conversation or answering questions for readers.

Responsiveness – 3 out of 10 –

These blogs are not very responsive, as it does not seem like anyone is creating conversation in the comments, or even responding to those which are posted.

Grand total score for the Microsoft blog network is 48 out of 80.

Corporate Blogging Pitfalls

It has been widely recognized that blogging is an excellent way to publish content to a website, and many corporations and other businesses are beginning to embrace this idea with a great amount of enthusiasm. Not only are companies creating corporate blogs, but sometimes a single employee blogs as well, such as the marketing manager or CEO of the company. Some large corporations like Google and Microsoft actually support their employees in their blogging efforts. Unfortunately, there are some major pitfalls that need to be considered when it comes to corporate blogging, including the need to address a conflict that exists between the openness expected of bloggers, and the confidentiality expected of many companies.

There are some big questions that need to be answered here, leading to corporate blogging pitfalls. How much should an employee be allowed to say about the inner workings of the company in their blog? It is obvious that secret formulas and insider information are off the table, but what else should not be said? Should employees be allowed to criticize the company for which they work? Should they be allowed to criticize the products they sell or the services that they offer? How much time should employees be allowed to spend on their blogging projects in general? Is this a part of their job description, or is it something they should be doing on their own time?

The best way to avoid these corporate blogging pitfalls is to address the answers to these questions before employees are allowed to keep up with blogs focusing on the company. It is clear that when smaller companies decide to venture into this arena, that they should follow the examples and guidelines set by the larger corporations that have been blogging for a lot longer. One of the best solutions is simply to draw up a set of blogging guidelines that everyone within the company must follow in order to maintain a blog. By doing this before any blogging projects are created, certain activities can be nipped in the bud before they ever become a problem. By establishing a list of suitable topics and unsuitable topics, a corporation or company can better dictate which corporate blogging practices are encouraged and which are not.

Here are some of the corporate blogging guidelines that would help companies large and small avoid corporate blogging pitfalls regarding confidentiality and bad press.

- Refrain from being critical of other products or other competing companies.
- Make it clear that you are stating your very own opinion, and not the opinion of the company as a whole.
- If you are unsure of a specific topic or subject, discuss it with a manager or colleague before posting.
- Do not share secrets belonging to the company, such as secret formulas or processes, or information relating to mergers, takeovers or other confidential information.
- Do not use the blog as a means for selling products overtly, but be authentic and informative instead.
- Do not mention customers or partners by name without express permission.

Review of Windows Live Writer

When you find a tool that makes life easier, there is nothing more exciting. The need for corporations to simplify and systematize their processes has to do with working smart and taking advantage of things that allow workers to reach their goals without having to work quite as hard. One really cool tool that comes in handy during corporate blogging is Windows Live Writer. Some of you may already know what this is, while others may be avoiding it simply because it is the product of Microsoft, and there are a lot of people out there who avoid Microsoft gadgets by nature. Not only are we in love with the Windows Live Writer gadget from Microsoft, but we are quite obviously infatuated with it because not only does it make blogging infinitely easier, but also website updating and article writing as well.

This is one, single solitary tool that makes it possible to create a blog post completely offline and then publish it directly onto the blog. This one tool works very well with most of the major blog services, meaning that you do not have to go through a bunch of worthless steps to get everything set up. It allows you to easily and effectively insert hyperlinks, maps, pictures, tags and videos into your blog entries, meaning that you can get the most out of your blog from the use of one single solitary tool. Not all blog formats may be supported, but if your blogging format is supported then this unique tool will be truly invaluable for you. If you use an embedded website blog or an ActiveRain blog, you may be out of luck, but hopefully not for long.

If you cannot auto update your blog because your blogging software is not supported, don’t fret. You can still write your blog entries in the Windows Live Writer software and then copy and paste it into your blog software accordingly. The Windows Live Writer offers four different views, including a web layout, a preview layout, a normal basic Word format layout and an HTML layout. You can write your post or article and then publish it to Blogger, TypePad, Wordpress or whatever blog software you use, and then convert it into the HTML view for your website, or for a random blog platform that isn’t supported, such as ActiveRain, Trulia, etc. You can also switch into the normal view and copy and paste the results to submit to article distribution sites. In other words, any format that you need, the Windows Live Writer can create it for you.

There is only one real downside to the Windows Live Writer right now, and that is the insert video plug-in. It is only currently capable of letting you insert web based videos, rather than videos that are stored on your computer hard drive. This means you can put videos in your blog that you found online, but not videos that you found on your own computer which is something of a pain. Still, the software is excellent for most blogging purposes.
