Ten Tips for Better Corporate Blog Traffic pt 1

trafficUnless you went out and purchased an already established blogs, the chances are that you just recently launched your blog with only a single loyal reader, your own self. Maybe you received a few hits a couple of days later when you began to tell the people you knew about the blog, but that’s probably as far as readership has been able to go so far. All is not lost, however, as there are some pretty awesome techniques that you can employ when you are ready to increase loyalty and readership numbers. These tips are especially useful for brand new bloggers who do not have much readership to speak of. If you want to get the ball rolling, these tips can be especially useful.

As each of these tips builds on the last, it would be especially wise for you to begin at number one, and slowly move down the list accordingly. Each technique will build upon the last in some way, allowing for you to create some momentum in building your membership base. Eventually you will establish enough of a level of momentum that you will gain some sort of traction. You can easily build up a readership of 500 people or more per day, meaning that you will no longer be required to boost your readership as diligently as before. Instead, your loyal readers will do a lot of the work for you, getting the word out about your blog via word of mouth.

Without further ado, here are the techniques that will help you build readership for your blog in no time at all:

1 – First and foremost, you should begin by writing at least five major or “pillar” articles.

Pillar articles are most commonly tutorial style articles that are designed to teach something to your audience that they can use in their everyday lives. Generally these pillar articles are longer than the average 500-word article, and they are generally full of practical advice and other tips. Pillar articles are regarded as excellent, practical how-to lessons or articles. Articles like this stay current and over real insight and value to the reader. The more pillar articles you are able to produce for your blog, the better off you will be because these types of blog posts never go out of style, and provide value to every single new reader that visit your blog.

2 – At a bare minimum you should be writing one new blog post every single day.

Not every single one of your blog posts needs to be a pillar blog post, but you should still work on having at least five pillar posts at any time so you can continue to keep your blog fresh with new content. You should also implement news pieces and other short article style blog posts. The important thing to consider when it comes to posting in your blog is that you need to demonstrate to all first time visitors that you do take the time to post in your blog every single day.

Blog Wild By Andy Wibbels

If you are completely new to blogging for small businesses, this is the book to read. While there are quite a few books dedicated to this subject, few are this easy to read, or this informative. We weren’t quite sure what to expect from this book, but we ended up being pleasantly surprised. Before we begin our review, it is important to note that this book is designed for the complete rank blogging amateur. If you are already well versed in the basics of blogging, there are a few things to learn, but it is really intended for those that need start up assistance and a push in the right direction.

Wibbels is well known for his EasyBakeBlog site where he teaches visitors how to easily set up their own blog. Much of this same advice made its way into this book and it is truly designed for thos that have absolutely no experience with HTML or the technical side of setting up a blog. He starts up with a brief history of blogs, and covers some very important terminology.

The reader can learn about trackbacks, an area which often confuses even the most intrepid bloggers. Also covered in this section are how to find blogs to read, how a blog is typically formatted as well as some basic tips on getting started. The ball gets rolling a little faster by Part Two when he shifts gears and starts to take a look at how blogging effects businesses.

We highly recommend reading part two very carefully, since there is a lot of insight here. Everything related to business blogging, making money and using your corporate blog effectively is covered in this section and anyone can learn a lot. We appreciated that the author continued to use his friendly prose in this section, making it a lot less threatening for newcomers.

Part Four is a little more advanced and goes into how to pick your blogging platform, how to handle posting and a lot of the technical issues that first time bloggers face. Our main issue with this section is that the author focused so heavily on TypePad as being the best solution. Given that WordPress has easily overtaken TypePad, readers may want to consider finding their best platform on their own.

TypePad certainly has its benefits, but for beginners, we definitely recommend WordPress first and foremost. Part Five of the book covers some specific TypePad promotional techniques, as well as general techniques that can be used to increase readership, handle RSS feeds and things like podcasting.

Overall, this was an engaging read that is well suited to beginners. We would have liked to have seen a few more platforms discussed and a little less reliance on TypePad. It ends up dating the book and making the content much less evergreen. That said, we still recommend this book to those that need a firm foundation in the basics of blogging, and learning how a corporate blog can benefit your business.

Corporate Blogs to Model Yourself After

Forrester Research recently compiled a review of ninety different Fortune 500 blogs, and found most to be lacking the proper amount of stimulation. Sadly, two things of these corporate blogs barely ever received any comments, 70 % of them stuck completely to topics of their business without ever straying, and sadly, more than half of them simply regurgitated press releases and other news that was already pubic. Because of blogs like this, the general consensus on corporate blogging has been that it is not really worth the time and effort, and this is a true shame because when a corporate blog is done right, it can actually have a tremendous value to the owner. Below is a brief list of some of the corporate blogs out there that are shining examples of what this activity can do for your business because they really “get” corporate blogging.

37 Signals –

You could consider these guys to be the poster children for corporate blogging, with more than one hundred thousand RSS subscribers and a blog full of advice and insight about design and business, editorials and so much more.

Adobe –

Adobe actually offers a large collection of different employee blogs, and many of them happen to be excellent reads. Because Adobe is allowing its employees to blog, it has given them the power to evangelize the company’s products through reviews, tutorials and advice without actually forcing them to talk only about these products.

Amazon Web Services –

Amazon’s Web Services blog is one of the greatest corporate blogs in existence, because it reads like the blog of Amazon’s greatest fan. The great mind because the Amazon Web Services blog is actually an evangelist for the company, but his blog posts read like they’re from someone who is really truly amazed by the things that people are building in Amazon’s suite of different web services every single day. This blog is a true pleasure to read, which is what corporate blogging is about.

Freshbooks –

Freshbooks seems to be taking the lead from 37 Signals, utilizing their corporate blog in proactive ways by sharing insights and advice into how they do things to create true fans out of their blog users and readers.

Lenovo –

Lenovo is a computer making company that has a collection of blogs, which prove in no uncertain terms that they understand what corporate blogging is all about. They post about their products, but also musings relating to business, life, design and technology. One of their best blogs, Design matters, is a must read blog for anyone who is into design, and can be found at http://www.lenovoblogs.com.

Southwest Airlines –

The Southwest Airlines company has a “Nuts about Southwest” blog that does not take itself seriously, but rather it blogs about the airline industry and the company itself with a really important personal touch that allows the company to produce interesting and enjoyable content with only a slight hint at seriousness.

Getting Smart About Corporate Blogging – Part Three

Think before you hit the publish button. The first two part of this series discussed a semi-recent post made by Matt Cutts, that covered a few things that corporate bloggers need to know. The last point that we’ll cover in this series is what Matt had to say about blogging angry. There is some very powerful information and insight in his post, and we felt it deserved to be expanded upon in greater detail.

Business owners and corporate bloggers are human, and as such, we are subject to emotions. It is easy to get angry and fire off a few heated blog posts. What is not easy is to undo the damage that has been done. While you may be able to delete a bad post off of your blog, you’ll never be able to delete it from your reader’s minds. Posting angry is something that many of us have been guilty of in the past, but few stop to think about how this can affect them in the future.

The urge to vent to your audience and receive a few pats on the back can be very strong, especially when you’ve had a bad day. Whether you feel you have been treated unfairly, or a competitor is giving you a hard time, it is all too easy to lash out on your blog. This rarely works out the way that you plan however, and unless you want your blog to be associated with your rants, there are a few things that you need to do first.

1. Think before hitting the publish button.

As Matt suggests, never fire off a post and hit publish right away. You need to walk away from the situation for a few minutes to get a better perspective. In fact, after you cool down, you may wonder why you got so upset in the first place. If you haven’t hit post, no one will be the wiser to your problem or your outburst.

2. Think about how your readers will react to your post now – and how future readers will react to it.

You’d be surprised at what gets indexed by search engines. Let’s say that you fire off an angry post, and then forget about it. Six months from now, someone searching for information about your company stumbles across this post in a search. The first thing they see about your company is an ugly rant – what impression do you think that will give? You’ve got to look at the big picture, which isn’t easy when you are upset. That’s where the first point comes in.

3. Will the post tarnish your image, or the image of your company.

It’s one thing if readers think you are a blowhard, but how will that trickle down to your company? You are representing the face of your company through your corporate blog. Do you really want the public to see that face when it’s angry? Think about the consequences before you post, and remember that you are responsible for how others view you in many cases.

Blogging for Business By Shel Holz and Ted Demopoulos

When looking for a book on corporate blogging, it is always helpful to find one that is written by two of the most respected authorities on the subject. Holz and Demopoulos are internet superstars in their own regard and quite honestly, you couldn’t ask for two better people to get together to write a book. Corporate blogging is on a lot of company minds and this book does a great job of addressing pretty much everything you could ever need to know on the subject.

Shel Holz is the owner of Holz Communication + Technology and can count some of the biggest names in corporate America as his clients. This gives him a unique perspective on corporate blogging and you know you are dealing with a professional that is going to give you the right information. This is probably one of the reasons that this book has done so well and its success is well deserved. Holz is also a podcaster and offers some great tips on how businesses can take advantage of numerous types of technologies on their blogs, an area that many fail to cover.

Ted Demopoulos is an analyst that works with the top Fortune 500 companies across the world, and again, he is in a unique position to provide real world advice that really works. He began blogging very early on and has some unique insight on how to make blogging work for your company.

The book covers all of the basics, such as legal issues that you need to be aware of before you write a single word, how each business can benefit from having a blog, as well as how to get more out of your blog with monitoring. The prose is very no-nonsense and the book is very easy to read. It’s information is so good that it can be used as a resource book whenever you may have a question on how to do something or how to handle a situation. We especially liked the section on the future of corporate blogging, since it contained real information that can help businesses stay cutting edge and even become early adopters of some of the new techniques outlined in the book.

Overall, we found this to be a very engaging read that got to the heart of the matter quite quickly. Business owners don’t have a lot of free time on their hands and as such, they need a resource that will get to the point and supply the information they really need. This book wins on all points and should be purchased by anyone that needs more information on corporate blogging. The tips contained herein will help you avoid a lot of issues and get you started on the right track. We found it to be an engaging read that was well worth the money. If you are thinking about starting your own company blog, this is the book to get.
