March 4th, 2010 — Buildify, engaging ideas, video
In a lot of ways, text blogging has become a thing of the past. Folks are beginning to blog in other ways, including blogging in video and blogging in audio. Video blogs often tend to be more engaging, and they allow bloggers to use video channels and other unique opportunities to promote not only themselves but also their posts in completely new and exciting ways. Everyone and anyone who is looking for an all new blogging platform should get started with video blogging right now while it is still a good thing. When it comes to video blogging, there is no real thing as getting in too late, so if you’re not already V-blogging or video blogging, now is your chance to get involved. There are some challenges to contend with when it comes to creating your own video blog, however, so keep reading.
A lot of people do not feel comfortable presenting themselves in front of a video camera or in front of a crowd. The mere idea of having millions of people see them from around the world can be a major turn off. Video blogging should be seen as a great opportunity to connect with other people rather than as some frightening or overwhelming affair. By presenting yourself and talking in front of a camera, you may actually find a publishing method that is less formal and less daunting while still creating a powerful message. Besides, in most cases you will be in charge of and control of everything and its great when you are in charge of getting your message out.
Hosting videos can also be looked at as something of a challenge as well, however. Videos can easily consume a significant amount of bandwidth, so you are going to want to make sure that you have the right amount of bandwidth, as well as the financial stability to pay the bills associated with hosting your video content. Most brand new video bloggers can use video networking websites such as YouTube in order to have their videos hosted for free, which allows them to save a significant amount in operating costs without having to deal with any other technical challenges along the way.
The best way to really get started when it comes to video blogging or vlogging, is to see what the “best” at it are doing, and emulate them. Many top bloggers put videos not only on sites like YouTube but also their own individual blogs as well. Watch these videos and you should get decent background for your own video, as well as some pointers on how you can better communicate with your “reader base”. The more effectively that you can communicate to your audience, the more your audience will respond to you and the video blog entries that you post. Video blogging does not have to be complicated in any sense of the word, as long as you can handle speaking and presenting and sharing those videos with the world.

February 5th, 2010 — advertisment, audience, blog design, money, search engine, social bookmarking sites
Once you’re ready to set up your own corporate blog, you’ll need to figure out what your audience is since this will determine how you write your blog. If you already have a set group of customers that you feel will be reading your blog, you’re already pretty much set. However, if you want to reach out to a new audience, there are a few things that you will have to do first.
1. What is your demographic?
This is actually quite important when it comes to writing your blog. A younger crowd is going to want to see a blog that is more fun and integrated with social networking features, while an older crowd may feel more comfortable with a more staid blog. It will really depend, but these are some wide guidelines to help you. If you don’t know your demographic, it’s best to shoot for the middle of the road when it comes to style and the types of features that you offer on your blog.
2. How do you plan to find new readers?
Once you know your demographic, this will determine how you go about attracting new readers to your blog. For those under 35, promoting your blog on social bookmarking sites such as Digg will deliver your audience to you. However, these readers are very savvy and don’t appreciate over commercialized posts. You’ll need to learn how to walk that fine line between that and getting your message across.
Other readers can be reached through a PPC ad campaign targeting keywords that are well suited to your blog. This is a little expensive and most companies prefer not to have to spend money to promote their blog, but this is a good method. A secondary choice would be to release a press release detailing what your new blog will be doing.
3. The third option is just to let your readers discover you through search engines.
This will take the longest amount of time when it comes to building up your readership and it is a bit hit or miss. You’ll need to be very patient if you’re trying to grow your blog using only this method and you may never have the results you’re looking for.
The best bet is to combine all of these marketing tools into one to help you target your key audience. Once you’ve done that, word of mount will help you continue to grow your blog. Remember that you’ll need to keep writing compelling content if you want your audience to stick with you. A blog management company can assist you in writing posts that will get attention and they are also very useful when it comes to promoting your blog and handling the every day tasks that are associated with it. If you don’t have a lot of time to devote to building your blog’s audience, this is a very good solution that works well for most companies, big or small.

November 20th, 2009 — content, promotion, web traffic
In many cases, the most popular blogs got to their position by finding the right way to spin a topic. This technique can work for anyone that is looking to establish themselves as a corporate blogger, and it can dramatically impact not only how many readers you get, but also how they react to your post. While it is perfectly fine to write posts the way you want to, sometimes it pays to do a little research first, especially if you want to stand out from the crowd.
1. Research your topic.
If you have a blog post planned for a certain product, event or even a company announcement, take the time to go through other blogs that posted about the same or similar content. You can use Google’s Blog Search to help you find more outlets for this. Take the time to read each post to see what they are discussing and how they spun that particular subject.
2. Take notes.
Find the posts that you like and make a few notes about what they did with their content. Whether they put a humorous spin on something, or found a unique way of looking at the subject, write it down. It is important that you do not copy these posts, this is just for inspiration and to help you find your own unique spin. The more unique you are, the better your chances will be of attracting new readers.
3. Write your headline.
This is where the majority of your “spin” will go and the most time should be spent on figuring out what you will say here. The headline is sometimes the most important part of a post and without a good one, you will have difficulty driving traffic to your blog. This headline should not only contain your unique spin on the idea, but it should also be optimized for keywords that are related to your post.
4. Write your post.
Now that the headline is done, move on to writing the post and make sure to include your own unique spin on the subject. Find a voice that works for you and utilize it in this post. If you are known for your friendly posts, stick with that. However, sometimes, going outside the box can have a big impact. For example, if your posts are normally quite dry and you suddenly change that spin, you will get more attention.
5. Start promoting your post.
Your unique spin won’t do you much good if you don’t find a way to let people know about it. Submit your post to places such as Technorati and Digg. Your unique headline is going to come into play at this time. Thousands of readers use these sites every day and if your headline stands out from the crowd, you have a much better chance of making the front page.
6. Testing.
Now that you spun your first post, pay attention to the reaction you got and how much traffic you received. Fine tune your spin for future posts and use this data to help you decide which direction is right for your blog.

November 19th, 2009 — audience, comments, content, public relations
Right now, thousands of companies are using corporate blogging as a means of reaching out to new customers. This means that the field is incredibly crowded and getting more so every day. How do you get your blog to stand out from the crowd? It can be complicated at times, but there are several techniques that you can use to make sure that your blog gets noticed and that you beat your competitors.
1. Put a name and a face on your blog.
Don’t make the mistake of anonymous blogging. Many businesses owners make this mistake because they are not willing to put their employees or themselves out in the public eye. The result is a static blog that is boring and unpersonable. You will need to give a name, even if it is just your first name if you want your blog to be successful. A picture is also useful, but if you don’t feel comfortable with that, you’re going to have to use your personality to create that picture in the minds of your readers.
2. Blog about the right topics.
The blogs that get read find a way to mix current events in with their regular company news. The more topics you cover, the better your chances are of being discovered. Read through your competitor’s blogs and see what they are doing. Find out how you can do it better. It’s ok to have a few posts on your blog that may not be directly related to what you do. This helps build up your readership. However, it is important to find some way to relate every post you make to your company or your industry. Otherwise, your readers could get confused.
3. Allow your readers to comment.
It can be pretty scary to open up your blog to comments from your readers. However, this is a risk that pays off by allowing your readers to feel as though they are a part of what you are doing. If you do allow comments, it is alright to moderate them to avoid having a disaster occur, but you should allow some freedom of discussion. Many businesses make the mistake of talking at their readers instead of talking to them. By using comments, you can avoid this common mistake and ensure that your readers will feel that they matter to you.
4. Have fun.
The most common problem that all corporate bloggers face is that their industry may be a bit boring. There is a way to have fun with your posts, stay relevant to your topic and stay professional. If your blog makes you snore, what is it doing to your readers. Change it up every now and again and keep it lighthearted.
In order to avoid many of these pitfalls, it is a good idea to work with someone that is familiar with blog management. You’ll be able to get the benefit of their expertise and they can help you leverage your blog for success.

September 11th, 2009 — bloggers, research
This is a question that many business owners have when they consider getting into the world of corporate blogging. These days, it seems as though everyone has a blog and that the market is entirely glutted. The good news is, that there are more than enough niches to go around and there are plenty of ways that bloggers can stand out from the crowd, with a little hard work and some perseverance.
The first step is to find out just how many similar blogs you will be going up against. Do some research and subscribe to each of these blogs. Track them for about a month or so to determine how frequently they publish, what kind of content they are producing and whether or not you feel you can do it better.
This market research is incredibly invaluable and will help you determine what steps you will need to take next. For example, if your competitors have very good blogs, but they only publish rarely, you can use this to your advantage. By publishing once a day, or at least a few times a week, you can offer readers instant gratification on that topic. This works very well for micro-niches, and for very popular topics.
The second thing you will learn is whether or not their blog posts are any good. Do they have readers commenting? Learn from the mistakes they made before you make your first post to your blog. This will assist you greatly in spending less time figuring out what your readers want to know, since essentially, you are dealing with the same market.
After you have gone through these steps, the next one to take is to find your own unique voice, and your own unique take on the subject. Unless your blog will be specifically about your company, there is a lot of room to get creative and branch out. For example, if you are using your corporate blog to discuss certain products that are already widely talked about, find a way to make your voice stand out.
Always research the topic before you post to determine first how many posts are similar, and how popular the subject matter is. By using these techniques, you are actually benefiting from the fact that corporate blogging is so popular and using that to your advantage. You will be able to discover new keywords, or even new ideas that will help you improve your blog. Give it a try and see just how much information you can uncover on your competitors as well as the different products you will be posting about.
There are millions of websites and blogs, and while some may never find their readership, with careful work and a lot of research, you can begin to carve out your own section in the blogosphere. Remember, it can take months to find your stride, so give it plenty of time. With promotion, quality content and commitment, your corporate blog can succeed, no matter how much competition you may be facing.
