What Makes a Corporate Blog Stand Out?

If you don\'t stand out, you won\'t be found.Right now, thousands of companies are using corporate blogging as a means of reaching out to new customers. This means that the field is incredibly crowded and getting more so every day. How do you get your blog to stand out from the crowd? It can be complicated at times, but there are several techniques that you can use to make sure that your blog gets noticed and that you beat your competitors.

1. Put a name and a face on your blog.

Don’t make the mistake of anonymous blogging. Many businesses owners make this mistake because they are not willing to put their employees or themselves out in the public eye. The result is a static blog that is boring and unpersonable. You will need to give a name, even if it is just your first name if you want your blog to be successful. A picture is also useful, but if you don’t feel comfortable with that, you’re going to have to use your personality to create that picture in the minds of your readers.

2. Blog about the right topics.

The blogs that get read find a way to mix current events in with their regular company news. The more topics you cover, the better your chances are of being discovered. Read through your competitor’s blogs and see what they are doing. Find out how you can do it better. It’s ok to have a few posts on your blog that may not be directly related to what you do. This helps build up your readership. However, it is important to find some way to relate every post you make to your company or your industry. Otherwise, your readers could get confused.

3. Allow your readers to comment.

It can be pretty scary to open up your blog to comments from your readers. However, this is a risk that pays off by allowing your readers to feel as though they are a part of what you are doing. If you do allow comments, it is alright to moderate them to avoid having a disaster occur, but you should allow some freedom of discussion. Many businesses make the mistake of talking at their readers instead of talking to them. By using comments, you can avoid this common mistake and ensure that your readers will feel that they matter to you.

4. Have fun.

The most common problem that all corporate bloggers face is that their industry may be a bit boring. There is a way to have fun with your posts, stay relevant to your topic and stay professional. If your blog makes you snore, what is it doing to your readers. Change it up every now and again and keep it lighthearted.

In order to avoid many of these pitfalls, it is a good idea to work with someone that is familiar with blog management. You’ll be able to get the benefit of their expertise and they can help you leverage your blog for success.

Is a Niche Blog Right For You?

Is a niche blog right for you?If you’ve been considering starting a corporate blog, but you’re not quite sure that your company is ready yet, there is still a way that you can get your feet wet and start taking advantage of what a blog can do for promotion. Instead of closely defining a corporate blog as something that is used to talk about only your company or to relay company news, you can get involved in a niche topic that may actually be more popular.

A niche blog is usually a defined topic blog that covers something that interests you or can be related to what your company does. For example, let’s say that you run a company that specializes in search engine optimization. You could start a niche blog that would cover tips and tricks or new techniques that are available in this industry. By focusing on a single topic, you may be able to experience more success than you could with a regular company blog.

Here’s a great tip to get you started. Write down everything that your company does or sells, and get your inspiration for your niche blog from there. Find a way to tie in something that the public will find interesting or helpful and choose that to be the main focus of your niche blog. Using another example, let’s say that you have a sporting goods online store.

A great corporate niche blog for this type of company would be one that focuses on fitness tips. You can incorporate what you sell in a subtle way and provide a service to the public. That is the heart of a niche blog and the key to its success. By giving readers something they can really use or benefit from, you are ensuring that you will be able to quickly rise to the top ranks of corporate bloggers.

There are many different ways that a niche blog can be put to good use for your company. One of the most powerful is that you will be developing a reputation for yourself as an expert. Many first time bloggers make the mistake of trying to remain anonymous, or they don’t work on self promotion. We’re not saying that your corporate blog should be the “me show” but you will still need to find a way to inject a little bit of your own personality into your blog.

A niche blog offers a great way to do that, especially if you are covering tips that can be used or helpful information. Look at your blog as a way to develop yourself as an expert in what you do, and let company promotion occur as a side effect. Chances are, your blog will be more interesting and you’ll be getting solid traffic to your corporate site as a result. When you look at a corporate blog as a way of reaching out to the public and providing a service, it will give you the solid foundation you need for success.

Does Your Google Page Rank Really Affect Your Corporate Blog?

What\'s your Google page rank?Spend a few weeks reading about search engine optimization and you’ll likely become obsessed with your Google page rank score. If you’re not familiar with this, it is a system employed by Google that determines the popularity of a site and then assigns a ranking to it. Many factors are used in calculating popularity, but generally, the amount of links, the frequency of new content additions and the overall traffic a site receives will have a major bearing on their Google page rank.

But does this really matter to your corporate blog?

The answer is yes and no, and it pretty much depends on how you look at it. While a low ranking can make it harder to get a good search engine results placement, it doesn’t make it impossible. However, if you are trying to take advantage of all of your promotional avenues, trying to raise your Google page rank is pretty important.

So, here are some easy tips that can dramatically affect your page rank score and as such, where you are ranked in search results.

1. Increase the amount of links coming in to your site.

These are called inbound links, but not just any links will work. You’ve got to have “quality” links that Google will approve of. This means that submitting to link directories or using black hat linking methods will not help you much. You need to increase the amount of real pages that link to you. You can do this the old fashioned way by contacting site owners to exchange links, or you can do it on your own by leaving your link in comment’s on blogs, sending out press releases and encouraging readers to link to your blog.

2. Page titles really do matter.

This is a huge factor in your overall Google page rank. You’ll want to make sure that you are using keyword rich post titles for every blog that you write. For example, Company News is a bad title for a blog post. You would want to use something like Company Name – Keyword and then News. Try to experiement with different blog titles, making them keyword rich but still useful for your readers.

3. Using keywords in your posts.

Every post you make needs to have keywords in it, but you don’t want to go overboard. Stick with mentioning your primary keywords two to three times, unless your posts are very long. The best density is around 3 to 4%.

If you are curious to see how your efforts are paying off, we recommend installing the Google toolbar which will contain your current page rank when you visit your own site. You can keep track of your progress this way and see how well you are doing. It won’t happen overnight, but these tips will help you improve your overall page rank and as such, your search engine rankings, blog discoverability and the overall popularity of your site.

Marketing the Smart Way with Corporate Blogging

Find clever ways to market without sounding like your pushing products.Corporate blogging is a great way to market your products to the public, but you’ll need to walk that fine line between over commercialization and a total lack of promotion. The main reason that many companies set up their own blog is to find ways to attract new customers and improve their brand image, but this can also be a very powerful tool when it comes to marketing your products. Let’s take a look at one example of how a blog can be used to sell products the smart way without appearing over commercial.

For this example, we’ll be looking at a company that sells apparel. They’ve already set up their site and their cart is complete. Since they do want to reach out to the public, they’ve set up a corporate blog, but they are a bit stuck as to what they should be discussing. Beyond office gossip and brief company news they really don’t have a lot to talk about. Or do they?

The key to finding a way to promote your products and provide readers with posts that matter is to pick a niche and exploit it as much as possible. Since this company sells apparel for women, they have a huge opportunity to discuss emerging trends, cover fashion shows and talk about what matters to women when it comes to fashion, value and quality.

For this example, fashion week is approaching in New York City. Instead of just mentioning it once, this company can provide full coverage of the event. They don’t necessarily have to even attend the event, they can follow it in the news and provide their own unique recap. Now, instead of just stopping there, let’s take it a step further.

This company could use these posts to sell specific items in their store that are on trend for the moment or comparable to what the designers are selling. One great approach in this instance is to provide High vs Low posts where a designer’s clothing is pictured alongside the similar low cost product offered by the store.

This is an incredibly easy way for this company to increase their sales. It doesn’t come off as overly commercial, because the posts are seen as a public service. They want to help customers save money. That is really the key when it comes to mentioning products in your blog. You need to find that link that makes the reader think that this post is something that was created to help them.

This same technique can be used by any company regardless of what they sell. In a way, when you get into corporate blogging, you need to become a little bit of a journalist. This will help you find the news that relates to your company, and unique ways of presenting it to the public to increase your sales.

For many companies that don’t have a lot of time to do this, a blog management service can be of great assistance in finding that special link and helping you achieve your goals.

Getting Smart About Corporate Blogging – Part Two

Don\'t bad mouth the competition - you look worse in the end.In part one of this series we discussed a post made by Matt Cutts on corporate blogging. We went over the first point he made in his post, regarding leaving yourself wiggle room on deadlines. Now, let’s go over the second point, about how to handle yourself when dealing with or talking about a competitor. As Matt put it, never trash talk a competitor – but what does that really mean?

Most corporate bloggers are savvy enough to understand that trash talk has no place in a blog. Even if you are riding high on success and you have the world at your feet, there is no need to even mention your competitors. Trash talking them will actually end up hurting you more than them and once you leave a bad taste in your audience’s mouth, getting rid of it is nearly impossible. Let’s illustrate this point with a scenario.

Let’s say that Business Owner A has a corporate blog that gets a good deal of traffic and covers company news, as well as a few other topics. On Monday, Business Owner B decides to start an ad campaign that will directly effect the revenue of Business Owner A. The first reaction for many is to lash out and belittle the efforts of Business Owner B.

So, that’s exactly what Business Owner A does. They devote several posts of their blog to trashing B, and their product or service. Instead of getting the attention away from B’s ad campaign, all that A has managed to accomplish is giving them more traffic from readers that want to see what all of the fuss is about.

The second effect is that Business Owner A now seems a bit whiny and definitely unprofessional. Competing ad campaigns are common and their readers are savvy enough to figure out that the posts are being fueled largely by sour grapes. The overall image of Business Owner A has now been tarnished, and readers leave the blog as a result.

Now, instead of circumventing the ad campaign launched by Business Owner B, all that A has managed to do was to hand them new visitors on a platter. They managed to hurt their own business and will forever be remembered as poor sports. All of this could have been avoided by simply never mentioning Business Owner B in the first place.

No matter if a competitor is trashing you, dragging your company through the mud, or competing aggressively against you – never trash them in the public eye. The only one that will end up wearing egg on their faces is you. Remember to take the High Road, no matter what – and you’ll end up reaping the benefits. Readers are not stupid, and they do understand more about your business than you think they do.

Don’t give your readers the chance to see you in a bad light. Remember that professionalism is key if you want to establish yourself as an authority. Whining, complaining and trash talk have no place on your corporate blog.

How to Pick Different Categories for Your Corporate Blog

If you have decided to create your own corporate blog, one of the first things that you may be trying to figure out is what categories to create. Categories allow you to tag and file your blog entries, and they make it easier for your readers to find the specific entries that they are interested in reading based on the tags or categories that you choose. In other words, deciding how to pick different categories for your corporate blog is an important part of setting your corporate blog up for easy reading.

Choosing the different categories for your corporate blog begins by making a list of the different things that you want to write about in your blog. Once you have a good working list of the subjects that you want to touch on when writing your blog, the next step is going to be to open up a category for each of the topics on your list. When you are done adding categories for each of these topics, you should create one more additional category that will allow you to cover anything that goes above and beyond the scope of the categories that you already created. For example, let us say that you are creating a corporate blog for your computer or IT company. Some of the categories that you may include in your corporate blog on this subject will include:

- Computers
- Current Technology
- Industry News
- Company News

In addition to these categories, you may decide that you also like to blog about meeting interesting people and dining out when you attend corporate events. If this is the case, then adding a category to house both of these types of blog entries, or adding a category for each of these different types of blog entries will allow readers interested in learning what you are doing to find out about who you are meeting and what types of dining you are experiencing while attending corporate events and dining out with clients and other colleagues.

When you are building your first blog, reading other blogs for advice and inspiration is a good idea. Blogging on making money and blogging about blogging are not the only subjects that make money when it comes to putting together and writing in a blog. The blogosphere, or the world of blogs, is actually a lot denser with different categories and different topics and subjects that you can write about, which is why blogs are so popular in the first place.

When it comes to choosing categories for your blog, however, it would be wise to look at other corporate blogs that fit into the same niche or industry as yours, to get a feel for what other bloggers are writing about, and what types of blog entries are getting attention in your industry. Once you have a firm idea of what the current hot topics are, you can create categories that are accommodating, and this will ensure that you are working within defined categories that will attract the interest of your readers.
