Whenever you decide to get into corporate blogging, you should be aware that there are some precautions you will need to take. Here are some guidelines to help you avoid disaster and create a very successful blog.
1. Never air your company’s dirty laundry.
If you are frustrated about a client, or if your competitors are gaining on you, your blog is not the place to discuss this. It should never be used to air dirty laundry. You will come off as unprofessional and annoying. Always take the high road on your blog, no matter what.
2. Avoid blog wars.
Sometimes, blogging can get pretty intense, especially when bloggers disagree. No matter what someone is saying about you on another blog, never let it escalate into a blog war. Again – it’s all about the high road. You can address the issue once, give your official response and then move on. Nothing good can come from a blog war and your company will only come off as unprofessional if you allow yourself to be drawn into one of these fiascos.
3. Never hire an unstable employee to write your blog.
It is incredibly important to make sure that you can trust your blogger implicitly. Never allow a worker full access to posting without your approval. Numerous people have been fired after they revealed company secrets on a corporate blog – you don’t want this to happen to you. Sometimes, it is best to simply moderate new blog posts from employees than to risk having one of them smear your company all over the blogosphere.
If you do end up having to fire someone that is blogging for you, you will need to remove their blogging permissions before you speak to them. It is too tempting for them to start bleating to the rest of the world about their firing. Cut off their access before it can get ugly and you won’t have to worry about this.
4. Always be professional and yet fun.
A blog that drones on and on, only giving company and product information is dull, dull and more dull. This is a disaster in and of itself. You want the image that you project to the public to be capable and vibrant. This means that your blog posts should be very professional, but that it is ok to have a little fun every once in awhile. Keep it clean and keep it fun and you’ll hit all the right notes.
If you are worried about the process of having a corporate blog and the risks it can carry, we recommend hiring a blog management company. They can help you find the right balance for your blog and they are very useful when it comes to having someone assist with posting and daily management. Since they are an impartial third party, you’ll be able to get quite a bit of advice for your blog and you’ll have a better idea of what you need to do and what you need to avoid.

Hi,
Companies need to consider their blog as any other means of official communications. As they would not allow any of the above things to happen in a say press conference they cannot let it happen on their corp blog.
