Live Corporate Blogging

As corporate blogging maintains a stronger foothold on in many industries, companies are seeking ways to take their efforts to the next level. If you’re interested in growing  your blog’s audience and you want to engage your readers, you may want to consider trying a technique known as live blogging.

This is best illustrated by the activity that surrounds an upcoming launch and the subsequent blitz of a new Apple product. Weeks, if not months, before Apple releases something new, bloggers go to work talking about it, building up buzz and creating a frenzy. Then, as the day of the release gets closer, they kick it up a notch and get prepared. On launch day, many bloggers will be present in the audience and they will be blogging live about what is happening, in real time.

These blogs are always interesting to read, because they have that real time element and the excitement is palpable. You may not be Apple, but there are ways that you can use live corporate blogging to enhance your company, engage your readers and build up momentum to promote your new products.

The first step is to plan out an actual campaign for your live blogging efforts. Take the time to read through other live blogging events and their aftermath. You can learn a lot by taking the time to learn about any mistakes that were made, and how you can utilize the same exact tips in your business. You’ll also need to plan a big event, one that will interest your visitors and is large enough to generate buzz.

For example, a launch that covers a new type of dental floss may not be very exciting. However, a launch about a new type of dental floss that can dramatically reduce tooth decay without brushing would be. You’ve got to find that interesting angle, and then work to figure out how you’re going to push it.

A live blogging event will require some extra equipment. At the very least, you’ll need a laptop or a Blackberry. You’ll have to be connected to the internet and be able to post to your blog from your location. Once you have this in place, you can set up either a regular schedule to keep your readers updated, or you can do it as it happens.

Live blogging is exciting and these techniques can be used for virtually any corporate blog. The key is finding that angle, building up that buzz and following through. If you can do that, you’ll be able to hold a successful live blogging event. It’s a good idea to chronicle your efforts as you go through this process. This will help you plan out future launches and live corporate blogging events that will build on the success of your first one.

Try implementing these techniques the next time you have a new product or service coming out. Chances are, your readers will get swept away and you’ll notice a dramatic increase in site visitors and buyers.

How Valuable Are Your Readers?

Many list owners have a formula that helps them figure out how valuable their subscribers are. This is usually done so that you figure out how much money each subscriber means to you. For example, this may be $1 a month, $5 or even more. To come to this figure, the list owner typically will add up the sales generated by a mailing and divide that figure by the total amount of subscribers. Most marketers prefer to get to the point where each person will earn them $5 a month.

This same formula can also be applied to your blog and many help you get a better idea of the payoff that you’ll be getting from spending the time and effort to establish your corporate blog. Once you have a better idea of how much each one of your visitors is worth, you may even be more motivated to keep adding new readers and to keep your promotional engine running.

Thanks to the power of corporate blogging, your visitors may eventually exceed the value of your list subscribers. If you are writing effectively and making sales, you can easily have your visitors worth more than $10 a month to you. Keep it up and see just how much it can grow over a short period of time.

But there are other ways to help you gauge how valuable your readers are – after all – money isn’t everything. A valuable reader is one that reaches out to you through the comments section, follows your work and tells their friends. The amount of people that do that is generally pretty small, unless you have a very popular site.

This is invaluable for many different reasons. First – you are getting free promotion and that is worth a bundle. Second, you’re getting better page views which can spell more revenue. Last but not least, you are building up a targeted audience – and that right there can be worth millions.

Think about the value that each one of your readers has before you post one more thing to your blog. Ask yourself whether or not that post is also valuable to them. After all, this is a two way street. Find ways to build up more valuable readers and learn how to monetize the ones that are not responding.

Managing a corporate blog is not a static position and there is a little bit of work involved, especially if you want to be successful. By learning how much your readers are actually worth, this can actually help you reach your goals in less time. Take the time today to see how much your readers are worth to you and figure out ways that you can increase their value.

At the same time, consider how you can increase the overall value of your blog, since these two are interconnected. Never stay stagnant, and keep moving forward. That is the key to building up a strong following – and one that is very valuable indeed.

Publicizing your Corporate Blog

blogging1If you plan on writing a blog and using it for any purpose other than your own, then you absolutely need to be willing to find ways to effectively publicize it. Some people will tell you that all you need to do is write in your blog and then the traffic will magically arrive, but this is untrue. If nobody knows about their blog, how will they know how to find you?

1 – The first step in learning how to publicize your corporate blog is perhaps the simplest:

You need to simply be willing to talk about your blog, telling everyone you know about it. You shouldn’t randomly tell people you don’t know, but if you share your blog with your friends, family members, co-workers and colleagues, you will already be building a strong readership that will only grow with time.

2 – Use your e-mail signature to tell even more people about your blog.

Your e-mail signature is a small block of text that is automatically appended to the e-mail messages that you send. You can include information about your blog in your e-mail signature and then everyone who receives an e-mail from you will also receive a blog link. Experiment with different types of text and see what changes your traffic numbers and what doesn’t.

3 – Create links from your website.

If you have a website that you are trying to “push” through your blog, then strive not to let it be hard to find. Link prominently from your website to your blog, and from your blog to your website. You should have a link from your website directly to the main page of your blog, and when you reference your company in your blog, you should link back to your website. It should never be difficult to find one or the other, otherwise your readers will give up and move on.

4 – List your blog in every place that you list or advertise your website.

This means online materials and offline materials as well. Put your blog on your letterheads, your business cards, your advertisements, direct mail marketing efforts and even your fax header page. The more you list your blog in your marketing, advertising and communicating materials, the more exposure your blog will get. It really does not get any simpler than this.

5 – Enter into carnivals, which are an excellent way to publicize your corporate blog.

These are best of lists that feature posts on a certain topic, and they have an excellent viral marketing aspect that makes this method of blogging and marketing through your blog extremely important. If you want one single blog post to work real wonders when it comes to advertising your blog, then it is essential that you seek out blog carnivals that you can participate in.

Ideas for Blogging Content Pt 1

teddyBusiness blogging is rife with benefits for those who utilize it properly, as it adds significant value to a company’s web presence, increasing search engine visibility and encouraging excellent and meaningful interaction from readers, driving an increase of traffic to your website in the process. But blogging for business is not always easy, because writer’s block does happen to everyone. The following list of business blogging ideas will help to keep you going, creating new and meaningful content for your business blog for a good long time.

1 -Email to Blog Post.

Take any email content that you have, and recycle it in order to create new blog content. If you are like most modern business owners, you probably do your fair share of emailing which can work to your advantage. Re-purpose some of your email content by turning it into blog entry material.

2 -Address reader questions.

Implement a method for your readers to type in their questions to you. Consider adding a small box or a small form to one of your sidebars. All a reader will have to do is ask their question and click submit, and you will receive the question by e-mail so that you can address it in your blog. When the questions relate to your business, your products or your services, not only will this facilitate communication between you and your readers but it also makes for excellent blog content when the questions are relevant.

3 -Keywords.

Use a tool for researching keywords like the one offered by Google so that you can identify the keywords and key phrases that best relate to your business. When you know what people are searching for, it can better help you formulate an idea for a blog post. These tools show you exactly what potential readers are looking for, saving time and effort in determining what you should be writing about.

4 – News.

Follow the media, because there is nothing that influences the behavior of internet searches the way the media does. What is currently being talked about within your niche or industry? Which topics are being regarded as hot topics? Why not talk about them in your own words by turning them into blog entries? For added effectiveness, create Google Alerts so that you can generate an endless stream of blog content ideas and other valuable writing material. Any time something is posted about one of your chosen keywords, Google will e-mail you to let you know. Can it get any easier?

5 – Look to yourself.

Look at your own company in search of blog entries and subject matter that you can write about. What kinds of products and services are you providing to the public? What are the most important components of those services or products. Break this up into various information entries and not only will you be posting search engine-valuable content, but you will also be informing your readers of the value behind your products and services.

In part 2 of this article we will touch on more exciting ideas for creating blog content for your corporate blog.

Getting Smart About Corporate Bloggging – Part One

Don\'t set hard dates for product launches. In a semi-recent post on his blog Matt Cutts discussed some very powerful information about corporate blogging. We got a lot out of this post and decided to expand a little more on the subject. Whether you are already a corporate blogger, or thinking about getting started, this information could drastically effect the way you run your blog and how the public perceives it.

The first point that Matt covered was about leaving yourself enough wiggle room when it comes to product launches, updates or other big events. Whenever you set a date that is hard and fast, you are opening yourself up to a lot of potential problems. Let’s look at a common scenario and how this type of issue could have a negative effect on your business.

Let’s say that you use your blog to announce that on Date X you will be releasing Product Y. You start the buzz, everyone gets excited and your readers can’t wait. The countdown to Date X begins and as the big day gets closer, you realize that you’re not going to be able to make that deadline.

So, you post that Date X is now Date Z and explain that there is a good reason for the delay. Your audience is disappointed, and they may start to wonder about how professional your company is. While everyone understands that product launches are a delicate matter, setting a hard and fast date does raise expectations. If you can’t meet them, your audience may start to wonder what’s going wrong.

Date Z rolls by and you’re still not ready. You have another post about the new Date A, and once again, your audience is disappointed. By now, things look pretty bad, and you’ve already delayed the launch of Product Y twice. More problems occur, and before you know it your actual launch date is now Date D.

By this point, the majority of people that were really interested in Product Y will have moved on. You’ve failed to deliver, you’ve shown that you can’t keep a project on schedule and your launch will fizzle out. While some delays can be strategic and may increase demand, waiting too long and having too many delays will spell disaster for any product launch.

What can you learn from this scenario? First and foremost, while you do need to give your audience a date for a launch, it does not need to be hard and fast. Give yourself more than enough wiggle room so that if something does go wrong, your company is not going to be cast in a bad light.

This same principle can also apply to other promises you make on your blog. Bottom line, if you are not 150% sure you can keep a promise – don’t make it. It’s just that simple. If you don’t put yourself in a corner, you won’t have to worry about getting out of one. By leaving yourself that wiggle room, you’ll be able to present a strong front to the public and keep them interested in your launch or event.

Understanding How Social Networking Works for Blogs

Use social network sites to increase traffic to your blog.By now, the phrase social networking has been emblazoned on most of our minds. The problem is, not a lot of people understand how it really works or how to use it to promote their sites and their blogs. When used properly, social networking can be very beneficial and can help you pick up a lot of new readers. The key is learning how to use it effectively and learning the right techniques. Using the right social networking sites can mean the difference between a few hundred readers or a few hundred thousand.

Let’s start off with services like Twitter. Although your blog has a built in RSS feed, not everyone will subscribe to it. Twitter is a very popular new service that allows you to build your very own social network. You’ll get updates whenever someone in your Twitter circle does something, and as such, they will get updates whenever you do. Adding a Twitter module to your site allows you to reach out to your readers and adds a little more interest to your blog. This is also a very effective way of publicizing new events and building up word of mouth for your site.

Next, there are sites such as Digg.com and Technorati. Both are very popular, but they are not quite similar. Digg.com is more of a democracy, where Technorati uses a different means of indexing and promoting stories. You need to use both to cover both sides of the angle and attract the most readers. Digg.com can be pretty tough to break into and you’ll need to pay special attention to the type of content that does well on the service. For example, top ten lists are generally much more popular than simple posts on a news event. Find a way to incorporate a top ten list that is funny, interesting and related to your site and you’ll be able to do quite well on Digg.

Technorati works a bit differently. You’ll need to sign your site up for the service (it’s free) and then submit your RSS feed. Whenever you publish new content, you’ll need to use what are called “tags.” These are pretty much key words that describe your content. On the main page of technorati, you’ll see what is called a Tag Cloud. The biggest words are the words that are the most popular on the site. If you include these words in your posts, you’ll have a better chance of getting ranked better on the Technorati site. For the best results, set your blog software up to “ping” or notify Technorati whenever you publish new content.

Social networking is meant to be social and this means that you’ll need to reach out to your readers. It is all about building up relationships as well as readership. You can see great results with social networking and it can make a real difference in the popularity of your corporate blog as well as your regular site.

5 Musts You Should Be Doing When You’re Not Blogging

Unless you are writing hundreds of posts a day, the amount of time you spend posting on your corporate blog should be minimal. In fact, that is why so many decide to start their own blogs, since everything can be automated and you can sit back and relax. However, there are a few things you should be doing when you are not posting. These methods and techniques can help you explode your traffic and get better results from your work. Here’s what you should be doing when you’re not working or posting.

1. Promoting your blog.

You can build it, but there is no guarantee that they will come. It’s up to you to get out there and find readers. Whether it’s getting back links to your site to increase traffic, commenting on blogs that are related to your niche, learning new promotional techniques or taking advantage of social sites, you should spend around a half hour every day promoting your blog. This kind of focus can pay off and you’ll start seeing results in a lot less time.

2. Finding ways to make your blog better.

Is there a plugin out there that could make your job easier? Take the time to see how to make your blog work for you – and harder than ever. New applications are released constantly and many of them are free to low cost. Instead of sitting there with the same version of WordPress for three years, make the effort to be proactive and keep improving your blog.

3. Learning more about the medium.

The blogosphere is not stagnant, it is always changing. You need to stay on top of trends, read news pertaining to blogs and keep finding ways to make your blog the best it can be. By being an early adopter of trends and techniques, you have an edge that your competitor’s won’t.

4. Researching new topics to cover.

Whether you’re researching new niche keywords (they do keep changing) or you are finding interesting angles to promote your products, your research should be an ongoing process. If you don’t have the time to do it on your own, consider outsourcing this task and have them deliver the information to you so you can read it at your leisure.

5. Keeping tabs on your competition.

This is a step that many companies fail to take and as such, they usually end up falling behind the pack. Always take the time to find out what they are doing and subscribe to their blog RSS feed so that you get instant updates delivered right to your reader. This is the easiest way to stay on top of what they are doing and you can use this information to make your blog better.

While some of these steps may be time consuming, they are necessary and will help you build up a very strong audience that is not only targeted, but invested emotionally in your company.

Frequently Asked Questions about Corporate Blogging

Some frequently asked questions...If you are completely new to blogging, you may find that you have a lot of questions and at times, it can be hard to find the answers. We’ve compiled the most common issues facing new corporate bloggers and supplied the answers to these problems below.

1. Is this going to make my company more profitable?

Yes and no. It is important that you go into corporate blogging with the right mindset. Yes, it can be a very powerful means of promotion, but it’s going to take a lot of time and success will not happen overnight. The main reason that most companies get into corporate blogging is not to increase sales directly, but to improve their search engine rankings. Often, the result of a better ranking is more sales, but you should not view your corporate blog as a mythical tool that will rake in millions of dollars in sales.

2. What blogging platform should I use?

This is a tougher question because the answer is a bit nebulous. Everyone is going to have their preference, but overall, the most powerful and customizable platform has to be Wordpress. You’ll have two main options with Wordpress. First, you can set up an account on Wordpress.com, where they will host and install your blog for you, or you can download a free copy at Wordpress.org and install it on your own server.

For those that don’t have a lot of experience, the hosted version works quite well, despite its limitations. For those that need more options with plugins and configuration, installing it at the server level is the best option.

3. How do I promote my blog?

Once again, there is no set answer to this question, but there are several techniques that can be used successfully. First, you’ve got to make your blog easy to find on your own corporate site. Next, you’ll need to start promoting it in two different ways, directly and indirectly.

Direct promotion involves submitting your blog posts to social bookmarking and networking sites. Indirect promotion involves leaving comments on other blogs and leaving a link to your own blog inside. This should be used in moderation and your comments should always be related to the post and not blatant promotional attempts.

4. Is corporate blogging worth the effort?

Absolutely, but only if you are willing to spend extra time promoting your blog. If not, then it is a waste of your time. A good corporate blog will take a few months to catch on and you’ve got to be willing to take the time to really work on creating great posts and promoting them. Success is not going to happen instantly, and it will take work. However, you can see a big difference in your main site’s traffic and in public opinion when you really work on your blog.

Corporate blogging is not for everyone. If you’re interested in getting started, it is best to remember that it will take a lot of time and effort. For those willing to make that sacrifice, success is just around the corner.

5 Tips to Get More People to Read Your Corporate Blog

Use correct keywords to gain more readers. The whole point of creating a corporate blog is to be able to reach out to your customers, build up an audience and market your company. It takes time to build up an audience but there are many things that you can do to ensure that more people will start reading your corporate blog. Let’s take a look at just a few hints that will get you started.

1. Promote your blog on your own site and in company material.

Take yourself back to a few years ago when more companies started building an online presence. Back then, you had to put your URL on everything (and you still should be) to get noticed. The same is true to today. It is important to actively and heavily promote your corporate blog in any way that you can. Adding it to your site should only take a few minutes and you’ll be capitalizing on people that are already interested in your company.

2. Use social networking sites.

Submitting your blog posts to places such as Reddit.com and Digg.com are great ways to increase your traffic and discover new customers. Keep in mind however that generic posts that are not very interesting are probably not going to get voted up on to the front pages. Pay attention to the posts that make the front page on social networking sites and find a way to do something similar on your own blog. Top ten lists are always popular and there is usually a way that you can create one for your own business. Let’s say that you run a corporate blog for a shoe store. You could do a top ten list on common foot injuries and how they could be prevented. Get creative!

3. Schedule interviews or invite guest bloggers.

Let’s face it, unless you are an incredibly engaging person, your blog might get a little bit dull from time to time. Inviting a high profile blogger in your industry to guest post on your blog is a great way to get cross traffic. If they won’t do that, schedule an interview with them and post it on your blog. By including someone who is more popular, you’ll be leveraging their success and putting it to work for your site.

4. Use keywords.

Smart bloggers use keywords that will ensure that their blogs are discovered. Read up on search engine optimization and then put those same techniques to work on your blog. You’ll be ranked higher in search engines, your discoverability will go up and you’ll be promoting your company the easy way. SEO is not that difficult and its benefits are numerous. Find keywords that are popular and integrate them into your blog posts.

5. Comment on other blogs in your industry.

Whenever you leave a comment on a blog, include your own URL. Many people underestimate just how powerful a comment can be. Just make sure that the comment won’t count against you or your company!

Getting a Better Corporate Blog Ranking pt 1

directoryIf you ask ten different bloggers about the best way to increase your search engine ranking for your corporate blog, you will certainly get at least ten different answers. There are a myriad of different ways that you can increase your blog’s search engine rankings in the top search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN. The best approach is to find a number of strategies that will work for you, implementing them one at a time and combining them for the best possible results. Here is a look at some of the best strategies for success with generating better blog rankings for your corporate blog.

1 – Target Audience.

If you have not done so already, you need to build yourself a list of specific phrases and keywords that your target audience is specifically looking for online to find what you are providing. Blog ranking is only useful if you are ranking for the right keywords and key phrases.

2 – Posting Schedule.

Write your blog content often, and make sure to use your keyword list as a guide for all of the content that you produce. This will help to make sure that you are improving your search engine rankings for a much wider range of different phrases, which is going to lead to more traffic in the long term.

3 – Get Links.

When you add quality content to your blog fairly regularly over time, you are also turning your blog into a resource that is much more useful to its readers. This will help you to attract links from other webmasters for increased exposure in search engines, increasing your link popularity in the process.

4 -Directories.

Add your blog to web directories in various sources on the internet. This is another excellent strategy for increasing your link property and for seeing an improvement in ranking as well. You should conduct some basic research to figure out which directories will offer the best value for the cost.

5 -Recycle or upcycle with focus.

Re-purpose old content in order to get more bang out of your buck. You can compile and revise older blog posts in order to turn them into longer articles. You can take these articles and get more out of them still by using them to increase your ranking, your visibility and your blog traffic as well. Start submitting articles to article submission websites, providing a link that connects back to your blog for an increase in visibility overall. You should also consider submitting your articles to large scale industry websites within the industry that you operate in. Many websites will consider publishing quality articles, and the majority of them will be willing to include a link back to your website at the end of the article. More links and more content on the web leads to better blog rankings, hands down.

These are only five strategies and there are plenty more to consider when it comes to increasing your blog rankings and getting the most out of your blog generation strategies.
