Live Corporate Blogging

As corporate blogging maintains a stronger foothold on in many industries, companies are seeking ways to take their efforts to the next level. If you’re interested in growing  your blog’s audience and you want to engage your readers, you may want to consider trying a technique known as live blogging.

This is best illustrated by the activity that surrounds an upcoming launch and the subsequent blitz of a new Apple product. Weeks, if not months, before Apple releases something new, bloggers go to work talking about it, building up buzz and creating a frenzy. Then, as the day of the release gets closer, they kick it up a notch and get prepared. On launch day, many bloggers will be present in the audience and they will be blogging live about what is happening, in real time.

These blogs are always interesting to read, because they have that real time element and the excitement is palpable. You may not be Apple, but there are ways that you can use live corporate blogging to enhance your company, engage your readers and build up momentum to promote your new products.

The first step is to plan out an actual campaign for your live blogging efforts. Take the time to read through other live blogging events and their aftermath. You can learn a lot by taking the time to learn about any mistakes that were made, and how you can utilize the same exact tips in your business. You’ll also need to plan a big event, one that will interest your visitors and is large enough to generate buzz.

For example, a launch that covers a new type of dental floss may not be very exciting. However, a launch about a new type of dental floss that can dramatically reduce tooth decay without brushing would be. You’ve got to find that interesting angle, and then work to figure out how you’re going to push it.

A live blogging event will require some extra equipment. At the very least, you’ll need a laptop or a Blackberry. You’ll have to be connected to the internet and be able to post to your blog from your location. Once you have this in place, you can set up either a regular schedule to keep your readers updated, or you can do it as it happens.

Live blogging is exciting and these techniques can be used for virtually any corporate blog. The key is finding that angle, building up that buzz and following through. If you can do that, you’ll be able to hold a successful live blogging event. It’s a good idea to chronicle your efforts as you go through this process. This will help you plan out future launches and live corporate blogging events that will build on the success of your first one.

Try implementing these techniques the next time you have a new product or service coming out. Chances are, your readers will get swept away and you’ll notice a dramatic increase in site visitors and buyers.

Ideas for Blogging Content Pt 2

sittingBusiness blogging is rife with benefits for anyone who is able to utilize it properly, as it adds a significant amount of value to a company’s web presence, increasing search engine visibility and encouraging excellent and meaningful interaction from readers, driving an increase of traffic to your website in the process. However it is important to keep in mind that blogging for business is not always easy, because writer’s block does happen, especially when you do not want it to. This is a continuation to our list on ideas for creating blogging content for your corporate blog.

6 – Theme.

Create a series of blog entries that focuses on some kind of theme that is relevant to your business. For example, write about the “Top 10 Reasons…” or “15 Steps To…” or “10 Things You Should…” and make each of these items a separate post in your blog. This is also the kind of blog entry that will get a lot of links from other bloggers all over the internet, which will send extra traffic in your direction if you let it.

7 -Put it on paper.

When you really need to brainstorm for ideas, take out a piece of paper and start putting ideas down on paper. Write down information on your products and your services, and then write down different ways that those products and services can potentially solve the problems of your readers. Jot down some of the best features and benefits for your services and products, writing freely rather than necessarily editing yourself, and by the time you are done you will have a bunch of new blog entry ideas.

8 -Interviews.

Conduct an interview of someone in your company or industry in Q & A format on your blog. Reach out to experts in some field that is related to your company, inviting them to do an online interview through e-mail. When you get answers back from the interviewee, you can publish the entire interview into a blog entry.

9 -What are they doing?

Consider looking to other bloggers in your industry in search of blog content ideas and blog content inspiration. What are other bloggers talking about in your niche or industry? What topics seem to be the most popular or the most talked about in your niche or industry? Read other blogs, visit forums and conduct as much research as you can in order to stay current on what is hot and happening in your industry.

10 – Google News.

Head to Google News (http://news.google.com) and do a search for the keywords and key phrases that are related to your business. This will bring up all kinds of interesting new content including news articles, press releases and other content that will provide an excellent resource for blog entry ideas and guidance for content writing.

With these tips for content creation, you will find it difficult to run out of blog topics to write about in your corporate blog.

Corporate Blogs as Internal Newspapers

Always get permission if you are going to use last names. One of the best ways to raise morale is through an internal newspaper that keeps employees appraised on what is going on with the company. They foster a sense of belonging, especially if you cover employee birthdays, events and special happenings within the office. However, if your resources are a bit strapped, you may not have the time to put together a special publication. Print costs are not cheap, and it can be quite time intensive to publish a newspaper each month.

In order to get the benefits that a company newspaper can bring, without the downsides, you can begin to use your corporate blog to fill this position. By including your employees in your blog’s news, they will feel more a part of the company and they will want to share the posts with their friends. Everyone likes feeling like a star, and a blog is a great way to share news, promote friendly competition among employees and keep everyone updated.

Before you jump in and start making your corporate blog into an internal newspaper, there are a few things that you should remember:

1. Ask before using last names.

A lot of people prefer not to have their full names splashed all over the internet. You may not realize it, but if other sites are including your RSS feed, your posts are appearing all over the internet. Always ask permission to use an employee’s last name, or err on the side of caution and use first names only, or their first name and last initial. They will know who you are talking about, but your readers won’t. In today’s environment of identity theft and cyber stalking, last names should be avoided.

2. Always remain professional.

Sure, it’s a fun company newspaper, but the general public will have access to it. Unless you are going to password protect the posts for your internal news, you will need to keep that veneer of professionalism up at all times. It’s one thing to be lighthearted and fun, it’s quite another to veer towards being unprofessional. If something has the potential to be spun in a way that is negative towards your company, don’t publish it.

3. Be wary of posting photographs.

A lot of companies like to use photographs on their blogs to let the public know that there are real people working for the company. This is terrific, but you should always remember point one above. Never use last names to identify people in a photo. The public doesn’t really need full disclosure, they’ll be able to see the real people – they don’t need their names. Again, with the threats to people’s safety, it is best to err on the side of caution.

These are just a few things to remember before adding this option to your corporate blog. Remember, if you don’t want the public to know something about your company – don’t write it! Always keep the fact that news can be twisted in front of you while you are writing your blog.

Bill Gates Supports Corporate Blogging

In a special address to an audience comprised of chief executives, Bill Gates recently said that regularly updated blogs and journals could be a great way for firms to let customers, staff members and partners alike what they are doing or working on. He has said that blogs created advantages over other ways of communicating which are older or outdated in nature, such as e-mail and website communication. More than 700 employees working for Microsoft are already using blogs so that they can inform people about their projects and keep them up to date.

The blessing of blogs by Bill Gates came during a keynote speech that was given during the Microsoft annual CEO summit, which was held at the Microsoft campus which is in Redmond, Seattle. The speech served as a canter through many of the forthcoming technological developments that business bosses need to know about, according to Bill Gates and Microsoft. The speech covered new wireless technologies, mobile phones, RFID, digital cameras and broadband, and all of the uses that can be gleaned from each of these vital technologies that businesses need to stay at the top of their game.

Bill Gates also made a point to dwell on the concept of blogs. He said that although blogs began primarily in the technical community, and even though they have much broader social implications now, they can also be used and taken advantage of by businesses as well. Bill Gates believes that blogs hold great advantages over older forms of communication and means of communicating and staying in touch like websites and e-mail. E-mail messages tend to be imposing, and they can easily miss out on key people that need to be included. Gates also noted that websites can be a problem as well, because they demand that visitors return regularly in order to find out if any changes have been made to the site, and websites require regular updates to avoid allowing them to become stale.

However, according to Gates, these problems can be solved by using blogs and RSS feeds, allowing viewers and readers to know whenever a blog has been updated. What blogging and these notifications are about is making it easier for people to communicate with one another. The ultimate idea here is that you should be able to get the information that you want, when you want it. Many Microsoft employees have already embraced these concepts, as there are more than 700 Microsoft employees who are currently maintaining corporate style blogs in order to let people know what they are working on. Microsoft does not currently make any of its own blogging tools, though it is largely expected to move into this industry very soon, pitching it into even sharper competition with Google, AOL and other companies.

Ideas for Blogging Content Pt 1

teddyBusiness blogging is rife with benefits for those who utilize it properly, as it adds significant value to a company’s web presence, increasing search engine visibility and encouraging excellent and meaningful interaction from readers, driving an increase of traffic to your website in the process. But blogging for business is not always easy, because writer’s block does happen to everyone. The following list of business blogging ideas will help to keep you going, creating new and meaningful content for your business blog for a good long time.

1 -Email to Blog Post.

Take any email content that you have, and recycle it in order to create new blog content. If you are like most modern business owners, you probably do your fair share of emailing which can work to your advantage. Re-purpose some of your email content by turning it into blog entry material.

2 -Address reader questions.

Implement a method for your readers to type in their questions to you. Consider adding a small box or a small form to one of your sidebars. All a reader will have to do is ask their question and click submit, and you will receive the question by e-mail so that you can address it in your blog. When the questions relate to your business, your products or your services, not only will this facilitate communication between you and your readers but it also makes for excellent blog content when the questions are relevant.

3 -Keywords.

Use a tool for researching keywords like the one offered by Google so that you can identify the keywords and key phrases that best relate to your business. When you know what people are searching for, it can better help you formulate an idea for a blog post. These tools show you exactly what potential readers are looking for, saving time and effort in determining what you should be writing about.

4 – News.

Follow the media, because there is nothing that influences the behavior of internet searches the way the media does. What is currently being talked about within your niche or industry? Which topics are being regarded as hot topics? Why not talk about them in your own words by turning them into blog entries? For added effectiveness, create Google Alerts so that you can generate an endless stream of blog content ideas and other valuable writing material. Any time something is posted about one of your chosen keywords, Google will e-mail you to let you know. Can it get any easier?

5 – Look to yourself.

Look at your own company in search of blog entries and subject matter that you can write about. What kinds of products and services are you providing to the public? What are the most important components of those services or products. Break this up into various information entries and not only will you be posting search engine-valuable content, but you will also be informing your readers of the value behind your products and services.

In part 2 of this article we will touch on more exciting ideas for creating blog content for your corporate blog.

Buildify Gives Back: Blog Action Day 2008

This year, the focus for the annual Blog Action Day 2008 is on poverty. Bloggers around the world have the opportunity to participate in this effort to raise public awareness of global poverty. EU ministers have agreed to join in, and thousands of bloggers will be taking part in this year’s event. Buildify is also joining in, and will be taking their efforts one step further.

In addition to their posts on poverty for Blog Action Day 2008, Buildify will also be donating the entire day’s revenue to Habitat for Humanity. The organization is responsible for building more than 250,000 homes and aids people throughout the world, helping reduce the sting of poverty. Credit Karma (see Credit Karma’s Blog) will also be matching their portion of contributions made by Buildify on this day.

It is a rare event when you can gather thousands of bloggers to focus on a single issue, and the power of the previous Blog Action Day was evident. The 2007 event was centered around the environment, and had an amazing impact not only on the blogosphere, but also the rest of the world. It is expected that the 2008 event will exceed last year’s popularity.

By taking a few minutes out of our busy schedules to focus on the plight of the less fortunate throughout the world, it is hoped that the lives of millions will be impacted. Given the previous success of Blog Action Day, it is clear that this can be accomplished. Currently, more than three billion people are forced to subsist on less that two dollars per day, and poverty is quickly becoming one of the most important issues facing our world today.

That number includes more than one billion children. According to Global Issues, it is estimated that approximately 640 million children live without adequate shelter, while more than 400 million do not have access to safe sources of water. Approximately 270 million children do not have access to health care, and due to this sad statistic, more than 29,000 children die every single day.

Children in developing countries are hit the hardest by poverty. Nearly 28% of children in these countries are underweight and malnourished. South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa are by far the worst in terms of need, and the problem is expanding rapidly. When you consider that out of the two billion children in this world, that one billion suffer from the effects of poverty, it is clear that action must be taken to bring them relief.

Buildify is proud to be able to take part in this global push to end poverty and hopes that their contribution will make a real impact on the lives of those in need. It’s not too late to take part in Blog Action Day 2008, and these sentiments can be carried out throughout the year. Buildify encourages our readers to give back to their community, both globally and locally and to do all in their power to end poverty. By working together, we can make a difference.

Covering External Stories – Good or Bad?

No two blogs are created equally, and for that reason, corporate blogs all touch on different subjects and different stories. Some people who write in corporate blogs wonder if covering external stories is a good idea or a bad idea. Some people shy away from the idea simply because they are not clear on the matter, while others attempt it even if they do not know if it is a good thing to do or not. The truth about covering external stories is that as long as the story is relevant to the subject of the blog, and the content is rewritten to suit your blog or credited back to the original writer, there is nothing wrong with covering external stories in your corporate blog.

There is only so much corporate blog content that you can create based on your own company. You can talk about a lot of company related information, or focus on information relating to the industry that your company sits in, but still you will eventually run out of content to write about, because as much information as there is out there, there is not an infinite amount of ideas to capitalize on. This is why it is important for many corporate bloggers to explore the idea of covering external stories in their blogs. External stories may be drawn from other blogs, from websites, from newspapers and from numerous other sources.

The trick when it comes to external stories is giving credit where credit is due in your corporate blog. If you want to write about stories that have already been released on the internet, then what you need to do is give credit to the original writer, even if you post a completely unique version of the same story online in your very own words. When touching on external stories in your corporate blog, you should choose to write a unique version because it will make you stand out in search engine results, but you should also provide a link or a track back to the original writer to give them credit for the content, the news story, the idea, or whatever else you drew from in order to get your blog entry.

Coming up with unique content for your corporate blog is not always going to be easy. There is nothing wrong with looking for inspiration in other blogs and on other websites, as long as you meet a couple of conditions. First of all, you need to make sure that you are writing unique content so that search engines do not penalize you for duplicating content that was found elsewhere on the internet. If you found the content you are referencing through a search engine, then they will surely notice that yours is a copy. You also want to make sure to reference the original writer with a link or a track back to give credit for the content that you used. Finally, you should make sure only to cover external stories that are actually relevant to your corporate blog and the subjects that you write about in it. If you find content elsewhere on the net that is relevant to your blog, feel free to talk about it in your blog, just do so in a unique way if you want to garner traffic from your post.

Getting Smart About Corporate Blogging – Part Two

Don\'t bad mouth the competition - you look worse in the end.In part one of this series we discussed a post made by Matt Cutts on corporate blogging. We went over the first point he made in his post, regarding leaving yourself wiggle room on deadlines. Now, let’s go over the second point, about how to handle yourself when dealing with or talking about a competitor. As Matt put it, never trash talk a competitor – but what does that really mean?

Most corporate bloggers are savvy enough to understand that trash talk has no place in a blog. Even if you are riding high on success and you have the world at your feet, there is no need to even mention your competitors. Trash talking them will actually end up hurting you more than them and once you leave a bad taste in your audience’s mouth, getting rid of it is nearly impossible. Let’s illustrate this point with a scenario.

Let’s say that Business Owner A has a corporate blog that gets a good deal of traffic and covers company news, as well as a few other topics. On Monday, Business Owner B decides to start an ad campaign that will directly effect the revenue of Business Owner A. The first reaction for many is to lash out and belittle the efforts of Business Owner B.

So, that’s exactly what Business Owner A does. They devote several posts of their blog to trashing B, and their product or service. Instead of getting the attention away from B’s ad campaign, all that A has managed to accomplish is giving them more traffic from readers that want to see what all of the fuss is about.

The second effect is that Business Owner A now seems a bit whiny and definitely unprofessional. Competing ad campaigns are common and their readers are savvy enough to figure out that the posts are being fueled largely by sour grapes. The overall image of Business Owner A has now been tarnished, and readers leave the blog as a result.

Now, instead of circumventing the ad campaign launched by Business Owner B, all that A has managed to do was to hand them new visitors on a platter. They managed to hurt their own business and will forever be remembered as poor sports. All of this could have been avoided by simply never mentioning Business Owner B in the first place.

No matter if a competitor is trashing you, dragging your company through the mud, or competing aggressively against you – never trash them in the public eye. The only one that will end up wearing egg on their faces is you. Remember to take the High Road, no matter what – and you’ll end up reaping the benefits. Readers are not stupid, and they do understand more about your business than you think they do.

Don’t give your readers the chance to see you in a bad light. Remember that professionalism is key if you want to establish yourself as an authority. Whining, complaining and trash talk have no place on your corporate blog.

Why Fear Blogging?

Are you afraid of blogging? Many companies and businesses are actually quite afraid of corporate blogging because they are afraid of being different. It’s time that we get over our fears, however, because the new way of establishing permanent relationships with people is to ask “Do you have a blog?” The truth is, blogs are a great way to hear other people’s ideas and to find out about companies, businesses, contractors and other people in the industry. Too often, however, people say that they do not have what it takes to keep a corporate blog, and this is usually not true. Anyone can keep a blog as long as they have some basic understanding of the process.

Most companies are supportive of the idea of corporate blogging, especially among employees who will adequately spread a positive message about the firm. Unfortunately, most employees are unaware of this position, and believe that corporate blogging may get them in trouble, or worse, fired. If you want to have a corporate blog, and you want to share the news about your company, but you are afraid that your boss or bosses will not agree, you simply need to learn how to motivate them. Show them some of the best corporate blogs out there, and show them what this corporate blogging effort is doing for these companies. Companies that have effective, popular corporate blogs are managing to see increases in sales even in times of economic crisis. What does this say about the power of a corporate blog? A lot, actually.

According to Technorati, there are more than 4.3 million web blogs out there. The word of mouth networks are simply becoming more and more efficient, and absolutely vital as a result. The fact that there are so many corporate blogs out there is an excellent indicator that everyone is blogging, and if your company is not already blogging, now is the time to start.

Here are some of the reasons why employees within a corporation should be allowed to blog:

1 - People do not trust corporations, but corporate blogs allow them to facilitate community and communication, building stronger relationships with companies that they perceive to be trustworthy. If you are honest with your readers in a corporate blog, they will trust you more, end of story.

2 - Talking to corporations is difficult, but corporate blogs facilitate communication in an easier and more effective manner. Communicating by phone, e-mail or website can be difficult, and who knows if you will ever get a response. But if visitors comment in blog entries, they know they will be seen and heard.

3 – Blogs create believability. What do you think is more believable and friendly, a press release from the company’s PR representative, or a couple of blog entries on the subject? Blogs are inspiring, they are friendly, and they are full of communication. When readers want info on your company, they will sooner turn to your blog than a press release in the news.
