February 16th, 2010 — Buildify, blog design, networking, promotion, publicity
If you plan on writing a blog and using it for any purpose other than your own, then you absolutely need to be willing to find ways to effectively publicize it. Some people will tell you that all you need to do is write in your blog and then the traffic will magically arrive, but this is untrue. If nobody knows about their blog, how will they know how to find you?
1 – The first step in learning how to publicize your corporate blog is perhaps the simplest:
You need to simply be willing to talk about your blog, telling everyone you know about it. You shouldn’t randomly tell people you don’t know, but if you share your blog with your friends, family members, co-workers and colleagues, you will already be building a strong readership that will only grow with time.
2 – Use your e-mail signature to tell even more people about your blog.
Your e-mail signature is a small block of text that is automatically appended to the e-mail messages that you send. You can include information about your blog in your e-mail signature and then everyone who receives an e-mail from you will also receive a blog link. Experiment with different types of text and see what changes your traffic numbers and what doesn’t.
3 – Create links from your website.
If you have a website that you are trying to “push” through your blog, then strive not to let it be hard to find. Link prominently from your website to your blog, and from your blog to your website. You should have a link from your website directly to the main page of your blog, and when you reference your company in your blog, you should link back to your website. It should never be difficult to find one or the other, otherwise your readers will give up and move on.
4 – List your blog in every place that you list or advertise your website.
This means online materials and offline materials as well. Put your blog on your letterheads, your business cards, your advertisements, direct mail marketing efforts and even your fax header page. The more you list your blog in your marketing, advertising and communicating materials, the more exposure your blog will get. It really does not get any simpler than this.
5 – Enter into carnivals, which are an excellent way to publicize your corporate blog.
These are best of lists that feature posts on a certain topic, and they have an excellent viral marketing aspect that makes this method of blogging and marketing through your blog extremely important. If you want one single blog post to work real wonders when it comes to advertising your blog, then it is essential that you seek out blog carnivals that you can participate in.

January 3rd, 2010 — Buildify, blogosphere, goals, networking, planning, promotion, research, social bookmarking sites
Unless you are writing hundreds of posts a day, the amount of time you spend posting on your corporate blog should be minimal. In fact, that is why so many decide to start their own blogs, since everything can be automated and you can sit back and relax. However, there are a few things you should be doing when you are not posting. These methods and techniques can help you explode your traffic and get better results from your work. Here’s what you should be doing when you’re not working or posting.
1. Promoting your blog.
You can build it, but there is no guarantee that they will come. It’s up to you to get out there and find readers. Whether it’s getting back links to your site to increase traffic, commenting on blogs that are related to your niche, learning new promotional techniques or taking advantage of social sites, you should spend around a half hour every day promoting your blog. This kind of focus can pay off and you’ll start seeing results in a lot less time.
2. Finding ways to make your blog better.
Is there a plugin out there that could make your job easier? Take the time to see how to make your blog work for you – and harder than ever. New applications are released constantly and many of them are free to low cost. Instead of sitting there with the same version of WordPress for three years, make the effort to be proactive and keep improving your blog.
3. Learning more about the medium.
The blogosphere is not stagnant, it is always changing. You need to stay on top of trends, read news pertaining to blogs and keep finding ways to make your blog the best it can be. By being an early adopter of trends and techniques, you have an edge that your competitor’s won’t.
4. Researching new topics to cover.
Whether you’re researching new niche keywords (they do keep changing) or you are finding interesting angles to promote your products, your research should be an ongoing process. If you don’t have the time to do it on your own, consider outsourcing this task and have them deliver the information to you so you can read it at your leisure.
5. Keeping tabs on your competition.
This is a step that many companies fail to take and as such, they usually end up falling behind the pack. Always take the time to find out what they are doing and subscribe to their blog RSS feed so that you get instant updates delivered right to your reader. This is the easiest way to stay on top of what they are doing and you can use this information to make your blog better.
While some of these steps may be time consuming, they are necessary and will help you build up a very strong audience that is not only targeted, but invested emotionally in your company.

December 27th, 2009 — blog design, content, goals, money, networking, public relations
Every week, new corporate blogs spring into existence, but many are doomed to fail from the start. How can you be assured that your blog is going to be a success? Follow in the footsteps of the leaders and learn from their mistakes! There are three main secrets to successful corporate blogging, that any business owner can implement. They are easy to follow and you’ll be able to start seeing the benefits right away.
1. Be Original.
This can be broken down into three main sub categories: Design, Content and Promotion. Let’s look at the first one, design. There are thousands upon thousands of free themes out there for most blogging platforms. That doesn’t mean that you should be using one. When you’re running a corporate blog, you don’t want to have the same theme as some crazy teenager that’s a little bit emo and a whole lot desperate. It gives the wrong impression. Spend the money to have a theme designed for you that is original.
Next, let’s look at content. Sure, it’s easy to lift content or use snippets of other articles that have already been published. But why would anyone want to read that? You’ve got to put yourself in your reader’s shoes. You may be busy and a blog post may be the last thing on your mind, but you’ve got to take that time to write an original post. It will pay off. Lastly, promotion. You’ve got to find an original way to get your site noticed. This means using social networking, PPC ads and having a great campaign that will get the attention of readers.
2. Be Prolific.
The best blogs are the ones that publish every day, and in many cases, more than once a day. Frequent publishing has many benefits. First, you’re giving your readers an excuse to come back more than once and to visit every single day. Second, you’re building more opportunities for search engine indexing. The best corporate bloggers take the time to really knuckle down and commit to producing lots of original content every single day. It does pay off.
3. Be social.
Today’s online world is social and if you’re not taking part, you’re missing out. Encourage comments on your blog, talk to your readers, not at them. There are many little ways that you can be social on your blog. We’re not saying drop that veneer of professionalism, but you’ve got to find a way to reach out to them. Remember their names, use social networking sites, leave comments on other blogs. These are just a few ways that you can be social and increase your readership.
If you’re not comfortable commenting on another blog, mention one of their more interesting posts. Chances are they’ll be thankful for the publicity and they’ll return the favor. This is an easy way to build up your blog’s readership and make some great contacts in the blogging world. Corporate blogging is a great tool, especially when it is utilized the right way.

December 17th, 2009 — advertisment, goals, marketing, money, networking, planning, platform, promotion, public relations, social bookmarking sites, web traffic
If you are completely new to blogging, you may find that you have a lot of questions and at times, it can be hard to find the answers. We’ve compiled the most common issues facing new corporate bloggers and supplied the answers to these problems below.
1. Is this going to make my company more profitable?
Yes and no. It is important that you go into corporate blogging with the right mindset. Yes, it can be a very powerful means of promotion, but it’s going to take a lot of time and success will not happen overnight. The main reason that most companies get into corporate blogging is not to increase sales directly, but to improve their search engine rankings. Often, the result of a better ranking is more sales, but you should not view your corporate blog as a mythical tool that will rake in millions of dollars in sales.
2. What blogging platform should I use?
This is a tougher question because the answer is a bit nebulous. Everyone is going to have their preference, but overall, the most powerful and customizable platform has to be Wordpress. You’ll have two main options with Wordpress. First, you can set up an account on Wordpress.com, where they will host and install your blog for you, or you can download a free copy at Wordpress.org and install it on your own server.
For those that don’t have a lot of experience, the hosted version works quite well, despite its limitations. For those that need more options with plugins and configuration, installing it at the server level is the best option.
3. How do I promote my blog?
Once again, there is no set answer to this question, but there are several techniques that can be used successfully. First, you’ve got to make your blog easy to find on your own corporate site. Next, you’ll need to start promoting it in two different ways, directly and indirectly.
Direct promotion involves submitting your blog posts to social bookmarking and networking sites. Indirect promotion involves leaving comments on other blogs and leaving a link to your own blog inside. This should be used in moderation and your comments should always be related to the post and not blatant promotional attempts.
4. Is corporate blogging worth the effort?
Absolutely, but only if you are willing to spend extra time promoting your blog. If not, then it is a waste of your time. A good corporate blog will take a few months to catch on and you’ve got to be willing to take the time to really work on creating great posts and promoting them. Success is not going to happen instantly, and it will take work. However, you can see a big difference in your main site’s traffic and in public opinion when you really work on your blog.
Corporate blogging is not for everyone. If you’re interested in getting started, it is best to remember that it will take a lot of time and effort. For those willing to make that sacrifice, success is just around the corner.

November 11th, 2009 — comments, goals, keywords, links, networking, search engine, statistics, web traffic
If you have ever felt like you were blogging to a wall, you know how difficult it can be to engage your audience. During the first few weeks or even months after starting your own corporate blog, there are going to be dry periods where you are writing for a handful of people. This is the most frustrating period and many bloggers pull up stakes. However, if you can begin writing more effective posts, you will start to see an increase in readers.
So, how do you that? There are many ways that you can gauge the overall effectiveness of your blog. We’re going to look at the two most important ways and provide tips on gauging and improving your effectiveness. Let’s get started!
Reader Effectiveness
This can be a tough one to gauge, at least at first, but you can learn a lot if you take the time to do your research. You will need to make sure that you have analytics software installed on your blog (Google Analytics is one of the best and it is free). This is going to be one of your main tools when it comes to figuring out how you are impacting your readers.
There are three main ways to gauge whether or not you are reaching your readers:
- The amount of comments left on your blog
- Whether or not your traffic starts to climb
- How many links you are getting from other sites
All three are vital to your corporate blog – but it’s not always easy to improve this area. First, start by including your audience in the discussion. Ask them direct questions, encourage them to leave comments, and keep up the conversation with them. Little by little, you’ll notice more interaction and your blog will begin to pick up steam.
Search Engine Effectiveness
While the results from this can be a bit slow to realize, you should start to see something happening if you are blogging effectively for search engines. You can gauge this by:
- How high your Google Page Rank is.
- How many new links you have coming in to your blog
- How well your blog does in results pages
- How many people are entering your site from search engines (see analytics)
If you are using keywords and not seeing your blog anywhere in the search results for that keyword, there is something wrong. Either you are picking keywords that simply have too much popularity, or you are not using them the right way.
Density is vital when it comes to keywords. You’ll need to include the phrase in the title of your post, in the first and last sentence and throughout the post. A good rule of thumb is to shoot for 2 to 3% density on your keywords or phrases. This will make a big difference.
If you are using keywords where there are already millions of results, fine tune your approach. For example, instead of real estate, you can use the keywords Montana Real Estate. Focus on long tail keywords as well to start building up solid results.

October 5th, 2009 — bloggers, comments, content, goals, marketing, networking, public relations, publicity
A corporate blog can be an incredible promotional tool, but it can also be used for networking purposes. Nearly every company can benefit from networking and much of the current internet community has been built on the back of social networking. How can you take advantage of this trend and put it to work in your blog? Here are just a few tips to get you started.
1. Make a list of all the related blogs in your industry.
Let’s say that you manufacturer tools and you want to reach out to possible customers that could be using your tools. It’s a good idea to do some research and find all of the different blogs out there that are owned by companies that could benefit from your products. This is definitely time well spent. Create a list of all of their blogs and subscribe to their RSS feeds. Keep track of what they are posting about and start reaching out to them.
2. Leave comments on their blogs.
One of the best ways to get noticed is by leaving a comment on their blogs. Keep it complimentary and professional and make sure that you use your company name and the address of your company’s blog. This is an easy way to open up the lines of communication and it only takes a few seconds. You’ll be able to reach out to companies all over the world using this method and you’ll be building up relationships that could pay off in the future.
3. Schedule a blogging event.
One great way to get the attention of other companies is to host an event that could include them. Get creative and think of different types of events that would suit your industry. Invite other corporate bloggers to attend. If necessary, find a way to host a special expo or something that is somehow related both to blogging and to your business. You’ll be able to get a lot of press and the coverage will only help increase your business.
4. Reference their posts in your posts.
If you want to give someone a corporate shout out, don’t be shy. They’ll probably be honored that a) you read their blog, and b) you thought enough of their post to reference it. This is can be used by doing a trackback, or simply by including their URL and some quotes. However, this should only be done if your post is complimentary and serves to buttress their own point. They’ll feel like you are an ally and they will be much more likely to reach out to you as a result.
These are just a few simple means of utilizing the power of blogging to increase your networking reach. Give it a try and see how many new contacts you can come up with in a week. Don’t forget to keep cultivating and looking for new opportunities. New corporate blogs spring up every day and there is a world of opportunity out there just waiting for you.

September 22nd, 2009 — audience, content, engaging ideas, networking, planning, social bookmarking sites
One of the biggest problems facing corporate bloggers is finding an audience. If you’re using your blog as a way to promote your company’s products, it is vital to quickly build up a strong readership. This is not an easy task, and even though paid promotion can be helpful, there are some better methods that can be used to get real results. Blog networks may be the answer to your problems.
If you’re not familiar with how blog networks work, it is similar in a way to the webrings of yore, but with some key improvements. A blog network will usually cover a set variety of topics within a certain industry. For example, there are blog networks for golfing, books, news, and many other topics. Readers that visit the blog network are given an opportunity to discover blogs that cover information they are already interested in.
A blog network will usually have a main page that will list all of the newly posted blogs that are members of the network. In addition, they may even promote select blogs that are doing well and feature them heavily on their main page. B5 Media is a great example of a massive blogging network that has had tremendous success. They now feature blogs in practically every industry and niche under the sun and continue to add more on a weekly basis.
Now that you understand what a blog network does, how can you begin to take advantage of that? First, you will need to identify your specific topic niche. This can be something that your company does, sells, or something that is pertinent in any way to your company. For example, let’s say that you run a site that sells golf clubs. You should look for a golfing blog network.
After you have found the blog network that is right for you, it’s time to get serious about posting. You may need to modify the approach of your blog for the network to make sure that you will be successful. Bloggers that incessantly promote their stores, or fail to craft interesting posts usually don’t do well. Instead of focusing solely on your company in your blog, you may need to start writing posts that provide information readers can really use.
To illustrate this, let’s return to our example of a golf club store. The corporate blogger for this store could begin writing posts that deal with golf swing tips. A subtle promotion link could be added to the store within the post, but the main focus of the blog post would be on an actual tip. This type of post usually does very well on a blog network and you can see remarkable results.
If you’re ready to get serious about promoting your blog, seek out a blog network that caters to your niche and sign up. Chances are, you’ll be able to increase your readership very quickly and your site will see the benefits right away.

Ask a dozen different bloggers for strategies on getting a better corporate blog ranking, and you will get a different opinion for everyone that you ask. There are a number of ways to increase your blog’s search engine rankings in the top search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN, as we touched on in Part 1 of this blog series. The best approach for you to take is to find a number of different strategies that will work for you, combining them for the best possible results. Here is a look at some more of the best strategies for success with generating better blog rankings for your corporate blog.
6 – Internal Links
Link between all of your different posts any time that it makes sense for you to do so. Make sure that keywords are included in the links. This is excellent for your readers because it provides usability, and it is also excellent for the search engines by providing visibility.
7 – Press Release.
When your business blog is offering plenty of excellent content, you should take the time to publish a press release to announce it. Make sure that the press release includes good information about your blog, and offers a link so that readers can find it. This will not only add to the link popularity that was mentioned in Part 1 of this series, but it will also help you improve your blog rankings over all in search engines and among your readers.
8 – Networking.
Take the time to compile a list of websites that relate to your niche or your industry. Contact whoever runs or publishes the website and recommend your blog as a potential resource for the people reading their websites. If you have posted high quality content on a regular basis, most of these website owners would be more than happy to recommend your blog as a resource for visitors to their websites.
9 – Professional Help.
Consider hiring a professional SEO consultant that can help you with any of the strategies that you are having difficulty putting into action. SEO experts do exactly this for a living – They live to help increase the search engine ranking for websites of all kinds, and they can benefit you and your corporate blogging endeavor as well.
10 -Networking with Links.
Network with other bloggers that operate in the same industry as you. Linking up with other relevant blogs is an excellent way to share readers as well as rankings. A little bit of occasional linking with other blogs and websites in your industry will help your blog and will allow you to facilitate communication not only on your corporate blog, but elsewhere as well, which is a great way to improve your search engine ranking for your blog.
These are only five strategies and there are plenty more to consider when it comes to increasing your blog rankings and getting the most out of your blog generation strategies.

July 7th, 2009 — RSS Feed, aggregator, networking, search engine, social bookmarking sites
If you are completely new to corporate blogging, it can be pretty confusing to get started with everything. Once you’ve got your blog set up and you’re posting regularly, it’s time to really start promoting it. Here are some easy ways that you can promote your blog and get great results.
1. Learn how to ping.
Pinging is a process where you notify popular blog aggregation services that you’ve updated your blog. Most blog systems today have this feature built in, but you will need to turn it on. Basically, when you post, it will send out a little notification that your content has been updated. This will only work if you’ve got an RSS feed however. Once these services have been notified that you’ve added new content, it will automatically refresh to include your latest post. If you’re utilizing blog directories, this will also post a small snippet of your blog on their main page, where it can be easily discovered.
2. Learn to Digg It.
Digg is one of the easiest ways to promote your new blog, but you will need to spend a little time doing research on the site. No matter what kind of content you publish, there is a way to fine tune it for the Digg audience. Spend a week going through the content in your main area of focus to see which ones are the most popular. Once you’ve got it down, submit your post and wait for other Diggers to start clicking that Digg button. The more people you can get interested in your posts, the higher your chances are of making the Digg homepage, where you can get a lot of traffic.
3. Utilize Search Engines.
Search engines are a great way to get new traffic to your blog and since you’ll be publishing content regularly, you’ll have a better chance of getting your site listed higher in the results. It’s a good idea to focus on popular keywords that will increase your chances of getting noticed. Try to mention these words a few times in your posts, but don’t overdo. Make sure your content is optimized and interesting and you’ll see automatic results from the search engines.
4. Start networking with other bloggers.
If you’ve got a few blogs that you read on a regular basis, start leaving comments with a link back to your site. This is a very easy way to get a lot of publicity for your own blog. Just make sure the comments are interesting and not thinly veiled spam for the best results. If you can start networking with other bloggers, you’ll be able to build up a great audience.
These are just a few ways that you can start promoting your blog without a lot of effort. Remember, the results won’t happen overnight, but with time, you’ll be able to build up a regular audience that will keep returning to your site or subscribing to your feed every day.
