Q: What should I be writing blog entries about?

A: This is one of the first questions that gets asked by small business owners who are curious about the blogosphere. The best advice that you can take when it comes to learning what to write about is to specifically write about any topic that meets two criteria:

a) It should interest you.

b) It should be related to your business in some way.

This may seem rather obvious to some people, but you might be surprised at how many bloggers choose the wrong topics and ideas for their blogs. If you do not choose a topic that is going to interest you, then you will be much more likely to fall behind on the blogging schedule that you need to maintain in order to attract traffic to your blog. If you choose a topic that is not related in some way to your business, then you will be defeating the whole purpose of blogging for your business in the first place.

Q: How often should I be writing and publishing blog entries?

A: Truth be told, the right answer to this one is: As often as you can. As long as you are not neglecting other aspects of your company, you should blog as often as is feasible. The benefits of blogging for your business tend to be rather cumulative in nature. All the things that your blog will do for you, including search engine visibility, buzz, popularity and traffic levels all come over time rather than at once. The best advice here then, obviously, is to blog as often as is possible, be it once a day, once a week, three times a week, or several times a day depending on what you have to say and how often it needs to be said. Choose a schedule that works for you and run with it for the best results.

Q: How should I organize the topics for my blog?

A: It is generally a best practice to limit how many categories you have, which will keep readers from becoming overwhelmed. Choose a handful of categories that you will write about and make sure that all of your blog posts fall under one of these categories, allowing readers to better search for and find the blog entries that you have written in the past. You can write blogs to fit into any category that you can think of; You should try to be broad when choosing organizational categories, so that you do not end up with blog entries that you do not know how to file.

8 Step Recipe for Good Corporate Blogging

Regardless of whether you already have a corporate blog, or if you are planning on starting one, if you want to turn your blog into a successful endeavor for your business, you need to have a recipe for success. Blogs that work well at attracting new clients and readers have a few key elements in common. If your corporate blog exhibits these qualities, then you are already well on your way to creating a successful corporate blogging endeavor.

1 – An excellent blog title.
2 – A friendly tag line or purpose statement.
3 – An easy way to get updates automatically.
4 – A list of categories that is easy to maneuver.
5 – A list of the most recent posts and the most recent comments.
6 – Links to useful, relevant websites, services and products.
7 – Frequent content posts with links that are relevant to the purpose of the blog.
8 – An easy way for readers to communicate with the blog’s author.

So the first question to ask yourself is what is in a good blog title?

Good blog titles are titles that tell your readers what your blog is all about. Your name should ideally notify your readers of who your blog is intended to target, and what your focus is. Your title should be compelling, because your readers need to fall in love with your blog quickly, or they will move on. Creating an excellent blog title can be difficult, so take the time to really think things through. Your title is important for search engines as well, so choose it wisely in order to best benefit your blog.

Next, your tagline is responsible for telling readers what your blog is all about, and how they can benefit from reading it.

This can be done in the header or elsewhere in the blog, as long as there is some statement that lets your readers know why they are reading. The tag line should state the benefit to the reader, who you are targeting, and who you are.

Most readers want to find your content quickly and easily, so lists of your recent posts, and your recent comments is an important addition.

Your readers are also going to want to comment, or find other ways to communicate, so make sure that you make it easy for them to connect with you. The third thing that most readers want is an easy way that they can get updates to your blog automatically, so set up an RSS feed, a newsletter or some other service to make getting updates easier for your frequent visitors and readers. The more you do to attract and retain your readers, the more successful your blog probably will become.

If your blog does not exhibit the eight qualities touched on above, now is your chance to make changes. If your blog does exhibit these eight qualities, then you are well on your way to creating a successful, attractive corporate blog.

How to Pick Different Categories for Your Corporate Blog

If you have decided to create your own corporate blog, one of the first things that you may be trying to figure out is what categories to create. Categories allow you to tag and file your blog entries, and they make it easier for your readers to find the specific entries that they are interested in reading based on the tags or categories that you choose. In other words, deciding how to pick different categories for your corporate blog is an important part of setting your corporate blog up for easy reading.

Choosing the different categories for your corporate blog begins by making a list of the different things that you want to write about in your blog. Once you have a good working list of the subjects that you want to touch on when writing your blog, the next step is going to be to open up a category for each of the topics on your list. When you are done adding categories for each of these topics, you should create one more additional category that will allow you to cover anything that goes above and beyond the scope of the categories that you already created. For example, let us say that you are creating a corporate blog for your computer or IT company. Some of the categories that you may include in your corporate blog on this subject will include:

- Computers
- Current Technology
- Industry News
- Company News

In addition to these categories, you may decide that you also like to blog about meeting interesting people and dining out when you attend corporate events. If this is the case, then adding a category to house both of these types of blog entries, or adding a category for each of these different types of blog entries will allow readers interested in learning what you are doing to find out about who you are meeting and what types of dining you are experiencing while attending corporate events and dining out with clients and other colleagues.

When you are building your first blog, reading other blogs for advice and inspiration is a good idea. Blogging on making money and blogging about blogging are not the only subjects that make money when it comes to putting together and writing in a blog. The blogosphere, or the world of blogs, is actually a lot denser with different categories and different topics and subjects that you can write about, which is why blogs are so popular in the first place.

When it comes to choosing categories for your blog, however, it would be wise to look at other corporate blogs that fit into the same niche or industry as yours, to get a feel for what other bloggers are writing about, and what types of blog entries are getting attention in your industry. Once you have a firm idea of what the current hot topics are, you can create categories that are accommodating, and this will ensure that you are working within defined categories that will attract the interest of your readers.
